Dan's right on....The wildflaurs were flippin fabulous
...& some of the roads we took down to Independance were too.
FM487 for instance...Never been on the stretch from Bartlett to Davilla...AWSOME HILLS & CURVES.Rest of it to Rockdale was fun too.
FM908 from Rockdale to outside Caldwell....another fun one.
FM166 Caldwell to Tunis & beyond to FM50 uh huh....
....& DEFINATELY (but with expected traffic) FM390 Historic Scenic Road thru Independance & west thru Gay Hill (yes...I know...) then to Burton.
FM112 from Lexington to Taylor is nice for a direct run either down or back north.
indeed!! most excellent roads for the eastern area, I was pleasently surprised!!
I was tired after those 350 miles and 10 hours, but it was greatness!!

see........... with these guys, we have argue time involved, what direction we go, how we got there, and who was wrong-possibly lost. I usualy end up getting tired of the bickering and smoke up my tire as a warning

but all in all it beats carrying maps, I just follow and enjoy.

I have a GPS, but I rarely carry a map...Sometimes I just take a road for the sake of a road...Sometimes I hit a deadend, but usually sooner or later I hit a road that I know and on we go

Picks from my recent trip down to the Hill Country of Texas.

Managed to make it down there while the wildflowers were blooming in full force. Beautiful to behold and the smell was wonderful. One of the goals of the ride was to go the Mac and Ernies in Tarpley.

Its hard to miss Mac and Ernies not cause its so big but because Tarpley is so small.

Tarpley is basically the intersection of 2 small ranch roads. Rant warning - I barely get cell service at home (4th or 5th largest city in Texas) and yet in Tarpley I get 5 bars and 3G. There's a reason ATT makes you sign a contract, cause nobody would stay after experiencing the "excellent" coverage.

Here it is. The Cabrito burger with fries and a beer. It was pretty good. If you like lamb, then it would be great. I don't, so next time, I'll try the Axis burger or a regular cheeseburger. The french fries were nothing special. I'll defer to ssdan on the fries - he's what you call a fry snob.

On the way outa town (west) I saw a Rio Hondo road and took it. It was paved with a little bridge. It then turned to gravel. Then the county quite maintaining it. It was a fun little track.

I ended up hitting all the "twisted sister" roads. Also a gravel CR that turned into nice double track and then somehow I came to a bump gate with a sign pointing away from me saying posted. Somehow I had gotten onto private land without knowing. Also, somehow, those pictures got deleted from my camera.

I'm spelling challenged, I couldn't spell that word, so I went with Fry Snob.

Not being as sophisticated a fry guy as you, I will abide by your rating.

Part of the charm of Mac and Ernies was eating outdoors at a picnic table on a warm sunny spring day, in the shade of a 100 year old oak with the slight breeze full of the aroma of the wildflowers and fresh grass. Enjoying a cold shiner and a great burger. It was a great day on the bike, with already some nice twisty roads to get there and even more ahead. This sort of day makes everything taste better.
