I have a Junior and was looking to get a Trad. but I saw the Special and was wondering how it sounds. I haven't seen anyway locally. I know the Specials were introduced to bridge the Junior with the Standard. Are they as good or better then the Studios? Or should I get an Epi. Tribute Plus instead? (All Gibson hardware in a Epi body.) I'm looking for a Traditional/old Standard sound but at a lower price. I've heard good reviews of the Epi Tribute but haven't seen any for the new Special.

I looked at them at GC. Didnt plug it in, though. I think mahogany on mahogany, you cant go wrong
The only thing that bothered me was the Pelham blue. In person, it wasnt a pleasant look. I'd have
to scuff it with a 3m pad.

After getting run out of GC by the salesman, I ordered one of these luddite SG's online:

I like the color but it doesn't really come out in most pictures I've seen. I read back in the day Pelham blue was used on the cheaper guitars. I don't really mind that since I like the retro color. It's also $2-300 cheaper then the current Specials with the P90's. Although I do like Gloss Yellow, I'd rather have the humbuckers.

Is that one of the Melody Maker SG?

A TV style yellow for that version would be very nice !! One can only hope . . .

Mine is the Melody Maker version. I wanted an American Gibson
to add to my collection that is comprised pretty much of Fender stuff,
but couldnt afford the LP I really want right now. This lo-$$ minimalist will
suffice 'til that time comes. I had a single coil version of a Melody Maker
around '80(?) and it was a step above unplayable. Although the finish on
the new one is rough, it's miles above the older one in terms usability.

Post pics on whatever you end up with, OK ?

From what I read at NAMM, they were supposed to have a TV Yellow version but it didn't make the cut for some reason. The one they already have is the "Les Paul Junior Special". It has two P90's.

This is the one I want though...

At least that SG has a rosewood fretboard unlike the Special.

Beautiful color. I'm also a Tweedy fan.

I have an Epiphone SG400; I'm becoming a fan of the style. Really comfortable and nice to play. I'm just a beginner, though, so I haven't played many different styles...

I've got one of those on order at Sweetwater, and it's supposed to ship sometime in April.

It was supposed to be here in February, but I kind of blew my discretionary guitar fund on my Collings 290 (pictures a couple of pages back) and my new Reason Bambino, a fantastic handmade 8W tube combo amp. My guy at Sweetwater called me to say the SG was supposed to ship any day, and I told him I was going to have to cancel it. A few weeks later I called to see if it ever showed up, and it was delayed until April, so I told him to leave my order in place.

Right now I'm drooling over a Collings cutaway dreadnought in european maple. I'm planning on taking a tour of the Collings factory over my birthday weekend at the end of May, so if finances permit that just might be my birthday present to myself.

$1700 isn't bad for that SG. You should order it. I'm sort of a beginner as well even though I've been playing on and off and on again for years.

I think the reason the SG looks better is because of the white pick guard and other parts.

If I had the cash, I would order it. Motorcycles are expensive.

So are guitars!

On a side note, I found Gibson will make a Yellow Special Humbucker. The only downside is that it's a Satin finish. I don't really like the fake worn look. Not sure if I like the burnt maple fretboard with bindings. On the plus side is the price. $749 seems to be the street price for the Humbucker. The P90's $799 while the Pelham is $999. I can't find the Satin Yellow Humbucker on Gibson's site. GC, MF and AM have it listed though. I can't fell if there are any other differences between the Satin Yellow and the Pelham Blue. They seem to use the same pickups.

Between dirt bikes and guitars, I'm going to go broke.

I'm thinking of selling my set of Ludwig Vistalite drums to help finance guitar addiction.
