I've been looking for a connect between Tequila, Ver. and the Puebla 866 state highway since January.
Bingo!
It all started last weekend by accident when someone missed a turn, a visiting British fellow's bike had a carb hiccup, and a asking a few questions in the right places.
This is a great ride, in fact, probably one of the best this state has to offer. Jorge, Letty, and I left before dawn, watched the sunrise in the rear view mirrors while heading to Cordoba for breakfast and el Pico was looming very large and very dark today. She lightened up a bit and the skies turned interesting shades of blue, so let's take a little photo tour of the Holy Grail ride. You can do Oaxaca the hard way by taking this road and you'll be glad you did. If you see this sign, you are heading in the right direction.

Let's see the lay of the land

Take a look around and see which way the wind blows

The Maytag man is a cabron

Name this town and I'll buy you breakfast

Take a look to the north and you'll see el Pico in the distance

Take a look to the south and see where you've got to go, deep in the sierra

Time for an Ansel moment break

When Mother Nature gives you a peek at the Widowmakers

The Widowmaker

And her two sisters

Good to see where you are going

A little slice of the ride

There are a few basic ways of transportation.
You can go by burro,

or you can go by horse,

or you can go on one of these things born in the stables in Spandau.

It's a long ride, about 8 hours from Veracruz and back. Only one Pemex in the sierra and no premium, but a new one is being built right near someone's mansion on a mountain peak. Photos of that next time.

This is the Sierra Negra Grande. If you are coming through Veracruz, you owe yourself a ride here.

Looks totally boring and unappealing.

I will stick with the expansive level cornfields of Ohio, thank you.
