I use to be an analyst and our days were filled with filling out forms and sending the results to Fort Mead where it was promptly filed away for posterity. I too had travel restrictions. I could not travel anywhere in the eastern bloc (this was the Cold War period). I think the fact that he is allowed to travel to Yemen and Pakistan but not Mexico tell mores about the idiocy of our government than anything else.

One poster even spoke of natives wanting to get their families out of Mexico. That reminded of all the folks that were going to move to Canada if Bush got re-elected.

I just returned from my ride down thru' the Baja peninsula to Cabo San Lucas and back. I felt safer there for the most part than I generally do here, in some parts of the Los Angeles area.
Of course, I did not go to try to buy or sell drugs, not even thru' the farmacia. And of course, that's what quite a few people say, back here.
"Oh, isn't that dangerous?"
Not as dangerous as riding the L A freeways and streets.

One form of this retort or another is de rigueur when discussing Mexico travels with folks who have never been recently

Coffee: more is always better

Perhaps put up a painting of the Colorado mountains in the office as well.

That would do it for me.

+1 on that.

One of the things I love about having done the trip I did, which included three months solita in Mexico, is that I get to come home and show people that I survived evil Mexico, that no one in a cartel kidnapped me or shot at me on a street corner, or any of the other things that people automatically associate with Mexico. And it's not just that nothing bad happened, but that so much good happened.

Props to everyone on this board who's trying to spread the Mexico-love

Care to share details? As a brief side note to the impending meltdown I am going to have over someone else telling me not to ride in Mexico because it is dangerous. LOL!
Do these people ever stop to think about what people do for riding that actually live here LOL!
Bought it used from an A&P who installed one of KLR Cary's last bore kits. Runs noticeably smoother and stronger than the stock bike I rode. Still uses oil, however. Expect the rings to seat around 25-40k miles. Gets 40-50 mpg.

It's for sale, BTW.

Props to YOU, alpiner84. When I was your age I doubt I "packed the gear" to do a trip like yours. Your lack of mechanical and riding experience makes your story even more impressive. Hopefully some riders will be encouraged by your example and discover the beauty of Latin America. Especially more women folk.

Hope you hang around here for a long long time.
