I sent a PM to Turkeycreek about the stranded 1150
If their party can be reached, I can pass on Moto Hank's number and he can listen to their tale and offer ideas.

The new evil part suspect: Hall Effects Sensor/Ignition Trigger
Let's hope it's something more simple than that |

Any of the casual readers want more information on the Hall Sensor, here it is:
LINK This malady stranded Hank on his trip to Ushuaia, but he had a spare and, hey, he's a BMW mechanic, so he did the fix on the side of the road. Like the aforementioned fuel pump controller, which does not exist on the topic bike, it's good to know how to do some work arounds so you can get back on the road. MikeMike's roadside splice fix in Veracruz for his broken FPC is a classic example. |

They've decided to cut bait.
They're ditching the Baja plans for now and are having a truck come down to pick up the busted bike. Thanks for the help! |

Thanks for the PDF link, Trice. It's now part of my GS stash.

My bike is still at Hank's. I will call him in the am and see if he'll proactively change mine out also, so I can carry the still good one as the spare. I'm inclined to go down there to Dilley, and watch how he does it. That'll be worth 100 YouTube videos. If they existed. |

Could be the hall sensor, but they have a classic tendency to go bad when wet, then heal themselves when they dry out (but they're still bad). Oftentimes the sensors are still good, but the wiring insulation 'cooks' due to engine heat and falls off, shorting out. A get home or get to the shop fix involves insulating individual wires with electrical tape or even duct tap, if no good part is readily available.
Might also want to check if the rider knows how long since the last fuel filter change- or if they bought gas from a drum. Fuel filter / pump can also be an issue on the older 1100 / 1150 bikes. A bad fill of fuel can ruin your day. When the ignition turns on, you should be able to hear the fuel pump prime up. A good decision was made by not going to Baja, I believe. Its a long push to Tijuana. |
