Tricepilot's Mad Scientist Tire Academy

This also might explain how I came to find some good things to deal with tire issues

Full Disclosure: I am not a king of tire repair issues. There are a lot of riders better at it than I am.

That said, other than a sliced tire near Palenque, I've been able to handle all my own flats quickly and efficiently.

And that flat near Palenque? Well, I just hung around with Ester until I decided what to do.

My only 'unrepairable' was in Panama when I had a softball-sized dent in the rim.

That's also the only time I wished my streetbike used tubes.

Tire repair skills are perishable skills, and I practice once a year with the kit, to keep those skills in "muscle memory" and to also make sure I have the pieces of my kit that I need (and that the plugs are fresh, etc.)

Sometime I have fun when riders are at my house, and we're talking tires.

I'll ask, "are you ready for flats?"

"Sure", they glibly reply.

Then I pull out the old tire and drive a nail into it (you have to use a drill and drill bit to create a hole for the nail, ask me how I know), I grab a chair, and say "ok smart guy, let it rip!"

PS anyone who doesn't believe you need to use a drill to start a nail hole on a practice tire, go try it for yourself.
Hey Trice,

Put down your drill, get out of your garage and get down here to South America wouldya?

The riding is sweet and the women are beautiful.

Kindest regards,
Hermano Juan

I don't want to start a big discussion but I use Ride-On in my tubeless tires on el Tigre to avoid flats. It works and works well. I have pulled nails and screws out and the stuff seals it up so I never knew I had picked them up while riding. It also took care of a high speed shimmy up front. They make a product for tube types but they admit that it can't work as effectively to seal tubes.

I still carry plugs and product is supposed to be compatible. Never had to try it

I first heard that story in Cuatrocienegas several years ago about Chapo Guzman. We need Snopes in Mexico

Trice, that was a great ride report! Along with MG's, Vinny's, and the Angola rr, my favorites here on ADVrider.

Thanks, but my whiney tale of woe isn't fit to be mentioned on the same page as those epic classics.

I will say this: as bad as it was, it was my best single day on a moto south of the border ever.

Best lesson: I had no skills, and needed to find some. (Still searching)
