Those video`s are great. All that`s missing is some dramatic piano music, just like in the old silent fillums.

Just came across this report and vividly remember reading it back in the old Two Wheels mag. 15 year old youths are impressionable. Thanks for putting it back on the to do list.

What an excellent read. Thanks for posting the stories and pics. Its great to read what sort of layed back attitude people had back then.
Back in those days communication was near non existent out there wasnt it ? and there wasnt a lot of traffic either. No one leaves home to go to the corner store now without their gps, satt phone, epirb... I did the trip up the CSR solo from the Wiluna mid last last year on a XT660Z Tenere and i have much respect for you guys after reading that yarn. Those sand dunes in places (most places) are so soft and steep i dont know how you muscled those big beemers through. Most of the wells are cactus now with maybe 4or 5 having good drinking water. Well 33 is much nicer now with a windmill/tank/water hole and grass all around it. The little community of Kunawarritji is about halfway down the track and they sell fuel and have a good stock of supplies. Still need fuel for 850km of riding though. Hardest thing i found was getting whipped by spinifex and stabbed by sticks (and i had handguards) and trying to stay in the vehicles wheel tracks without the front riding up the soft bank in the middle and flicking you off. Fantastic trip though and reading yours brings back lots of memories. Cheers |

thank you for sharing your epic csr adventure. there is only few others i would consider as spectacular as yours! since my first visit to the "red continent" in the late 80's (on a ténéré) i have fallen in love with it and come back a few times. oz is definitely my favourite destination, therefore i feel with your mates suffering from the devastating floods in the eastern states... the csr is no unknown to me, i dropped my own fuell that i carried in my landrover to be independent from capricorn roadhouse fuell support. so i was a bit more free fuellwise on a later run on my trusty yamaha. i pull my hat as it must have been quite a struggle on those g/s beemers. on nowadays bikes with modern geometry and suspension it ist still a challenge, but with those relics...good onya, respect !don't wanna steal your thread, that's why i add just a small pic...you have any clue from where about? best regards from the german outback wolfram

Hi jaybz and Wolfram. I havn't looked at this thread for ages and so just spotted your posts. Good work from you blokes riding down there. In quite a few ways the CSR experience has changed but of course the soft sand and overhanging bushes still make the ride a challenge. I should go for another CSR ride to see for myself how things have changed! Perhaps 2013- it'll be 30 years difference then
