Moab trail suggestions sought.

I am planning a trip in mid April with my father and one of our good friends to Moab for 3 days of riding. I have ridden Moab only a couple of times so I am looking for suggestions on what trails to do.

We are looking for suggestions at the technical level of the White Rim Trail. While we are riding LC4's, and have years of experience, we want this ride to be a nice, fun, comfortable and scenic. Not a survival ride.

So, we have one day planned and that is the white rim trail. I need suggestions for two more. We have the Moab East and West maps.

What say ye?

Thanks in advance.

Depending on which direction they hit it....the southern end of Kane Creek might be more than they want on LC4's if they're trying to keep the technical level close to Hardscrabble Hill and Murphy's Hogsback.

Onion Creek and the loop there. Monitor and Merrimack (sp?). Music. Gemini Bridges/ Bull Run. I second the Hurrah Pass/Chicken Corners.

I live in Colorado but I still might be of some help.....lets see..

Routes sorta similar too WR.

Willow Springs rd, starts just north of the Shell station or the rd to canyonlands, I think thats 313, and it takes you into Arches NAT park the back way. You come out near Balanced Rock.

Onion Creek, either out n back or up to the la sals and around the la sal mtn loop. Starts out by Fisher towers.

Hurrah pass and Lockhart basin rd to the needles. This route has a couple tougher sections but I've seen folks take 950's through there no problem.

There are all kinds of great roads near the needles district and Monticello. Beef BAsin, North Cottonwood, the causeway, butler wash, comb ridge, etc..

Flat pass/steelbender is good and relatively easy if you go north to south and keep an eye out for the bypasses around the hard sections, but there is one mandatory downhill ledge that will take some scouting or some air time.
Starts out near the golf course and ends at Ken's lake.

Kane Creek rim rd is fun and has insane views. It stays on top of the mesa just east of Kane Creek proper, pretty much an out and back. Access from 13 miles south of Moab, same spot as below (pritchett)

The upper portion of Pritchett canyon rd is good, access from from 13 miles south of Moab on 191, It'll be obvious when you should turn around, at a notch at the top of pritchett canyon proper, don't go down into pritchett unless you are looking for survival mode riding. Any rd in that area signed Behind the Rocks will have some big ledge drops and climbs.

Kane Creek proper, as mentioned, has some rough spots but if you go from the top all the hard spots are downhill and if you take the atv bypass at the one big rocky downhill its well worth the effort.

Good Luck, its endless out there!

White Rim is only half a day, plan for more on that day...maybe throw it in the middle for an easy day.

X3. Between White Rim/Sovereign/Hells Revenge you will see a bunch of different terrain in Moab.

I also enjoyed Poison Spider/Golden Spike on a DR 350. It was technical yet fun.

With the increased enforcement of the 15mph speed limit on WWT and all of the scenic stops, you might want to plan on more than a half day.

White Rim MIGHT be a "half day" if you were by yourself and had already ridden it a few times so there was no need to stop and check out the scenery. More than one rider and some picture taking and it seems to always turn into an 8 hour ride. Oh, and I second the rides to Chicken Corners, Lockhart Basin, Onion Creek and maybe Kane Creek Trail. (a bit tougher than the others but a ton of fun!)

Sovereign single track on LC4's? I think that would be work, not a hoot.

I rode WRT last year and never saw any enforcement. Maybe just lucky. I was pretty hooked up and scootin right along.

If Sovereign single track gets too tough as well it may IMHO, there is also the Sovereign ATV trail that kind of parallels and goes around some of the tougher sections. The Klondyke trail over in that area is also fun.

I strongly recommend you try the Slick Rock fee area just east of town. It is generally pretty easy and is an absolute blast to ride with lots of scenic views looking over the edge.

I also consider WRT a full day unless your are just riding to see how fast you can do it.

When I go back, I want to do Poison spider, as I would have liked to get up there, but at the time, I didn't know which trail got me up there. I think the first time going there is great to figure out the lay of the land, but sadly, it's only once you get home that you realize what you've missed. I would have also liked to have checked out the Whitewash sand dunes.

Onion Creek Trail near Moab

As you head out towards White rim from Moab take the 1st right main highway that runs with the Colorado river. After about 10 miles and past the 1st road on the right take a right turn.
The trail is fairly challenging towards the later end but great fun through the creek time and time again as you swirl around the onion creek.
I completed this on a BMW650 thumper back in 2008 with Black Tiger also on a 650 BMW. Great fun for sure.
