I have to admit that my R90/6 is inching its way closer and closer to the farthest corner of the garage. I too have an old Sportster as well as an old Suzuki GS1000. That is my new touring bike and it is head and shoulders better than the BMW. The Sportster will be out and about this Summer.

The cool thing about the old bikes is that resale is garbage on them unless you have some kind of rare model. You won't get a ton of money for that R90. If you buy a similar vintage Sportster, you'll pay about what the BMW sold for. I agree with the notion of just keeping th R bike and buying something else. I think 70's vintage bikes are the thing to have at the moment. Still dead simple, decent parts availability, old enough to seem vintage. In the short term, if you take your time, you can pretty much sell anyolder bike for what you paid.

I drives me absolutely crazy when it's time to work on the Beemer...when I have to work on the Harley...and it's not often except for those pesky T-nuts on the mufflers...it's easy and straight forward...

I LOVE my 1978 GS 1000. If (WHEN) I get mine rebuilt I will be able to put vintage plates on it. I think insurance is only like $100 a year then.

It's all about what you like. I had a sportster, HATED it. But my father in law has a nighttrain that is a nice ride(stock seat is terrible though, $15,000+ bikes should come with a decent saddle) I like the bikes, just not the image associated with them, and I think they are terribly overpriced for what you get, don't buy new. I don't want to dress like a pirate every time I go for a ride. Now if Harley would sell the euro only 1200R in the US I might change my mind and spring for another one. One side note, a good friend of mine had two old beemers that got wrecked, one his fault, one not. Then he went through a DR650, an 1150GS, an HD Roadking, now he is back with an 76 R90/6 and he is back to stay. Old BMW's are his thing, but not everyone likes them, so I guess what I am trying to say, OP is the correct answer is BOTH!

When you have a bike you like, but are tempted to get another, i never like to sell one to get the other, ive been able to get my next bike and keep the old one, i usualy sell the old one if i find i dont use it much, only snag is, i now have two bikes i ride and enjoy lots and want to keep, but having recently had a good ride on my friends sportster, i would like one for myself,time to extend my shed.If you keep your bmw and get your harley, you will soon know if you have made a good decision, and if you have not, then you still have your bmw.

I don't know much about new Harleys, but my '78 cafe sportster shook itself to death as I rode it, parts falling off left and right. Lucky, found a guy who just had to have the cafe for the NH meet (forget the name) and he had a '76 R90S and money he traded for it. What a relief. I love that R90S.

I had a beemer before the Harley, R60/5, loved it; but the Harley dealer was so close I had to give it a try. A month after I bought it, they moved 30 miles away.

Then there's the handling. I had to muscle around that Harley to get it to go where I wanted, which was a little scary at times. The beemer, I just think about where I want it to go and it does it. Yeah, still have the R90S.

Too bad you did not keep that Sportster XLCR cafe. They are worth about $30,000 now, being one of the rarest Harleys ever made.

Yeah, I thought about it; but we were starting a business and needed every penny. That's an amazing price. I always keep the wrong ones. The Sportster cafe was a beauty, much more so than the R90S. OTOH, the joy I've gotten from riding the beemer is, as the ads say, priceless. :)

$30K? I've seen a couple XLCRs sell for $12K-ish lately. They looked to be in good condition, from pics (did not see them in person).

Good looking bike, but from all I've heard, the function isn't quite on a par with the form.

But lookit what Michael Douglas was able to do with one in "Black Rain"!

The price tag on this 77 two years ago was $24,000.
The 78 is much rarer. They only made a dozen or so in 78.

What is on the tag has nothing to do with real value. I've seen Honda Dreams that were as rare tagged for like 4 grand. Not worth it by any stretch, but proving price tag has nothing to do with reality.

Last I'd heard was $10,000-12,000 for a clean one. Concours perfection might be a few grand more, but far from $24,000 and light years from $30,000.

You'll miss the R90/6..and it's not worth much. If you can house two bikes keep it and add the Harley to the stable. Pick upi an FXR and have two nice vintage bikes

"back in the day" I had 2 not so old airheads, a / 6 and a 81 s. Missed them both since then.
I had a 76 1000 Sportster for like 12 months, not missed it since I got rid in 93, a crap bike,
Now have 2 x /7 airheads and a Suzuki 600 Bandit, best of all worlds. OK, i'd love a new 1200GSA maybe, but what I have does almost everthing the GSA would.
