Distance Riding and Monkey Butt

With a trip from East Coast to West in the spring on a stock GS seat i am looking for some advice to make the ride as comfortable as possible if i am to average 750 miles/day. I'm sure there are lots of wise cracks to be generated from this question but seriously,..... anyone have some helpful input?

Powder has helped for me. I am sure baby powder would work, but medicated powder would be better. I use "Monkey Butt Powder".

I have also read good things about the bead seat covers.

Russell and Sheepskin

Hi,
I can do 750fairly comfortable with a Russell and Sheepskin.
If you don't want to spring for the Russell at least try the sheepskin. See Alaska Leather (Barb) in vendors.

I have added sheepskin to a stock seat and increased mileage 50%.

I suggest you consider a better seat that fits your butt, wear stretch bicycle riding pants with nothing underneath, use powder if you need to, and have antibiotic ointment handy if you develop any sore spots. And get some long day mileage in for practice to find what works for you. Try a 1500 mile two day trip to make sure that you have it figured out....and have a great trip.

If you want to stick with a stock saddle I would say, try the Beadrider and wear LDcomfort underwear. It's important that you don't wear any cotton underwear, it holds the moister next to your skin and causes Monkey Butt sores. Also use some medicated powder like Gold Bond.

I use Arm and Hammer unscented dry deoderant. Keeps your butt dry. Smear it all over your buttocks......no monkeybutt.

The best investment you can make is to buy underwear from Mario @ LDComfort (www.ldcomfort.com).

Not only are they very comfortable but in case you hit some heat they work fantastic getting the sweat of your skin - the primary reason for Monkey Butt. In case it is getting cold (not unusual if you ride in higher eleveations early or late) they provide very good insulation.

When I rode the ST1300 it got uncomfortable after about 400 miles. With his underpants I could comfortably ride 750+ miles. Cheaper and better than a new seat.

Bicycle pants - some has good padding in the areas that matters. Sheepskin or similar on the bike seat and powder inside the bicycle pants.

PRACTICE - that is, do not go from no riding to 1,000 miles days in one swoop. If I have not ridden for a while, it takes me some time to get up to speed again.

Others have already mentioned it - but definately go with the bicycle shorts. My comfort range is about doubled with bike shorts vs. w/o. The sheepskin seat covers seem to get almost universally high marks too, though I've never tried one.

I ride 08 GSA stock seat with sheepskin and love it. I have done 950 mile days and could still walk 750 mile days are not a problem. Got a Bill Mayer on my 1150GS and it is real comfy but have not done any real long rides on it

Under Armour makes some good shorts also that wick moisture.

The beaded seat cover does it for me. Aside from better weight distribution, it also keeps air flowing under your fanny. It almost seems too easy, but for less than $30, you really can't loose.

...what everyone else has said about biking shorts or some other kind of underwear that wicks moisture. I'm a big fan of powder too...almost any of them are fine--medicated if you think you're developing a rash.

Depending on your riding style of if you're hiking a lot as well, consider putting some stick-type deoderant on the inner thighs.

These techniques have saved my ass (literally) on many excursions and Uncle Sugar funded extended camping trips where I couldn't change clothes or shower often...7 days is about my limit!

Just don't use medicated foot powder on your ass/crotch! Don't ask!
