I have.... 18K miles on my 950 so far. Low miles, I know, but I don't ride enough. This is the first time I've opened the engine for maintenance. Well, I did replace the water pump seal as preventative maintenance, but haven't touched anything else. I've had no problems at all with the bike. I do plan other mods, but those are for fun & functionality. And I'm the 3rd owner. Well, call it 2.5 since the 2nd owner barely had it long at all. He changes bikes like most people change socks...

People say KTMs are high maintenance, but I don't see it. Sure, a high strung 450sx bike may need a new piston once a year if you race it. But all brands will if you race. I did rebuild my KTM 250sfx, but that was a racebike and it was my fault for buying a racebike that didn't have an hour meter on it.

So don't believe all the "problems" you see in either brand's specific forum section. Mostly hand wringing in both.

So, not to start one of those tire discussions but.... what's your favorite KTM Adventure tire? And do you have a place where you can get a bulk discount
Yeah, I had to leave the store when I saw that one.

A few years ago I went up secretly hoping they still had one just like it on the floor. I'd seen it there on a previous trip. I had prepared myself for what was to appen when I got home. As I pulled into the parking lot I watched it's new owner ride it out of the parking lot. :whew

My favorite 950 tire? I haven't done a whole bunch of testing but mine came with a brand new set of TKCs. 2000 miles the rear was junk. Front lasted like a 606 with the typical cupping after some time.

Tried the Big Block...maybe even two of them. Think I had a 606 on the front with it. 2000 miles or less the rear was junk. I didn't care for it in mud but this guy seems to love them. Of course, he can actually ride. I may give them another shot as they are wicked inexpensive in comparison to the 908.

During all of this extensive testing "It's in the name of science, SCS!" I was also reading up on tires for the 950. Found a whole bunch of people were getting the most life out of the 908 on the rear. Many also ran the 908 with a 606 on the front. Since I didn't feel like reinventing the wheel pun intended I tried it.

I get more life out of the 908. I like it better in the mud but it could just be my imagination. It does cost more but I'm still weighing that against burning up and changing more of the less expensive tires. Keep in mind they come in only one size and your rear wheel will be a tad wide for it. In the words of Poacher Bob, "They all do that."

As for the front, a 606 is a 606. I happen to like them off road and can deal with it on road. It hasn't tried to kill me yet.

As I typed that last line I recalled getting onto the edge of a 908 over in the Gaps and it getting my attention.

Source? Every February or so Chris has his tire sale. He treats me exceptionally well. Bulk is good. If you ride it you'll use tires. Might as well stock up and save some cash for gas.

Have also heard good things about the Heidenau tires. Depends on the terrain you plan to ride, I guess. He happens to be a dealer for those.

Now, let's move onto oil...

You say that like these scratches...

...didn't warrant trading the whole bike in for a GSA.

That was a great ride!

Nope, taking the old KLR for my final ride on it up, riding the new beast home (well, probably not directly home).

Be really careful. Those final rides sometimes don't end the way you thought they would.

Don't worry, made it there and back without issue. A bit chilly on the ride back but the bike is in the garage, left side tank removed and I am routing a wiring harness for my electric gear. Will be warm and tosty riding later this afternoon

Didja get the tank and the %$#&ing crashbar back on yet? That's the real test.

I've had good luck with the top bolt first then the others. If you need a hand I's gladly go up and droo, er, I mean do what I can to help.

Yeah, had to fiddle with it for a while but eventually it all lined up. Going to replace the bolt with a stud I think. One of those handy tips from ktm950.info

Hardest part of the whole deal was all the damn hoses and electrical connections to the tank. I think it was 4 hoses and 2 electrical connections on the tank. Plus 2 electrical connections on the side panel for the canister. Of course they are all just barely long enough to reach which makes them difficult to get on and off.

Put on just over 100 miles today
