Talks cheap.

You get this off the ground for $5-6K all up and I reckon you'll be turning people away.

And a bit of lead time so domestic issues can be sorted.

Same here, there are plenty of people who pay that sort of money to travel around in a bus so I reckon it's not too bad. If I didn't have 3 young kids and weren't building a new house I'd be there.

Believe me its expensive ( I am ex SA and have travelled that entire route several times in my own 4X4 and it would not cost that much). Have also looked at bike hire from CT to do the trip and seriously would not cost $10K. As for Charley?!

I agree on Nam over Zim, but the folk in Zambia are friendly enough. I gotta disagree 'bout Vic Falls - Mosi-oa-Tunya - The smoke that Thunders - is best seen from Zambia; I saw it from the ground (in camo) and from the air (thanks ro the RAF) several times and Zambian side is best, except when they're shooting at you....

You adventurous types would just love Ol Doinyo Lengai in Tanzania - I was there in 2008, the road was unbelievable, the terrain rough, the vista fantastic. The volcano is active and is on the side of Lake Natron (think pink flamingos) on the Tanzanian, kenyan border - the best three days of my safari. I travelled by four wheel drive and we broke the axle on the way in - that's how rough it was. didn't see any bikes but I think it is perfect country for them. They have fatastic tented safari camps and you can climb the volcano or just visit the waterfall for a swim - brilliant.

I'd go back to africa in a heart beat

Precisely. You'd never catch me back in that area again. Anywhere on that continent south of about 20 degrees N is a cluster fuck.

Ok ..what about borders and all that stuff in Africa does'nt that enter into cost ? if not definatley time?
This must effect the trip schedules and pricing somewhat.

Accommodation @ R500/night (decent stuff, not skimping) ~ AUD1,000
Miscellaneous (food, fuel, backup vehicle) ~AUD1,500

Total $5,000. Profit for organiser ~ $5,000 per rider. Total of 25 people should see them pocket $125,000 out of the deal. Say Thingy wants $5,000 per day then that leaves the organiser with $55,000 to cover his flights & other stuff plus make a small profit.

Now I know enough people (wife grew up in Namibia and Cape Town, and I have spent time in Zimbabwe and Zambia) and could put the same trip together for just over half that amount. Gaurenteed to be twice the fun - we will do the local BMW skills course in Ceres at Piet Fokkop's place.

I could bring my reprobate brother in law along who is almost as ugly as thingy and twice as funny. He will be happy to drive the backup vehicle for a slab of Castle a day instead of the $5000 per day. He will even do a daily video diary - once he is shown the right end of the camera.

So who wants to pay their 20% non-refundable deposit now?PM for payment details!!!

Come up with a more definate price, pick a date towards the end of the year, you know what you can do with the BMW skills course , and I reckon I'd be in on it.

Ah but you would need a has been celebrity along though! I reckon you could pick up Craig Mcglachlan for the cost of a couple of shandys and a hamburger a day... I am pretty sure he rode a motorbike in an episode of neighbours back in the 80's??? Nah you can count me out either way it is organised, as I have too many mates who have toured Africa and now have parts of their bowel removed or permanent intestinal problems... plus if I was going to do it I would just organise myself to do it rather than with a tour group... as an aside has anyone ever read Lois Prices (Lois on the Loose) account of her Africa ride, it is a great read and it proves that if a single chick can do it alone you dont need a overpriced tour company to tag along with... unless you want to be on television with Charlie as I think they are filming this ride...

After years of sickness and discomfort one of my friends had a large section of her bowel removed due to an intestinal problem she got whilst travelling across the continent in Africa. Two more of my friends have suffered from similar bowel/intestinal problems as well after travelling there, dealing with bowel problems on a daily basis even years later. My friend who had the bowel removed would go back in a flash though as she loves africa that much! Me, well I am still suffering from intestinal parasites from my Cambodia trip so there is no chance of me travelling in africa any time soon. I would like to see the country but getting sick there scares me and I couldnt be bothered dealing with the corruption and bullshit. Maybe one day though...
