lately I feel like my gs is just not the bike for me. commuting in the early mornings all slab highway miles. I am thinking about another sort of touring bike maybe a road glide or a sport touring bike. I miss the speed and nimbleness of my xb12r. Anyone got any input? I tend to get bored quick maybe the road glide isn't for me but they look bad ass. LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES. feel free to bash.

If an r1200gs isn't doing it for you, maybe you need a Ural?

Not in NoVa, but there's Michaux just across the border in Penn, check the thread here: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=632871

Or (for a short loop) just head for Sugarloaf Mtn, Peters Rd. is fun, and there's water crossings on Prices Distillery Rd, and W. old baltimore Rd.

It comes down to what you enjoy and will look forward most to riding, no?

...And no, loud pipes don't save lives. There's not a shred of science or data behind that old myth. Google "loud pipes save lives myth" and think about the impossibility of sound traveling AHEAD of its source to help avert our main causes of death (oncoming driver turning left in front of us, etc.). As a former HD salesman, I can tell you the only thing loud pipes are proven to do is get people annoyed at motorcyclists.

Anyway back on topic. Big touring bikes don't always make great commuters, esp. in our traffic. Nimble is terrific for commuting, so have you thought about a sport-tourer like a Sprint?

If I lived "up there" I would have a Michaux State Forest (PA) map tattoo'd somewhere handy...it offers a lot of great riding terrain just like shown in the photo of Bull Run Mountain Road.

Also might try to review and subscribe to this thread for some info:

Hmm. Silly ambulances and fire trucks, no?! So that's why they creep up on you unnoticed...

Loud pipes don't save lives and as you said, generally annoy more than anything else. But it's not due to sound's impossible feat of travelling ahead of its source unless, of course, the source is supersonic!

This is a good point--thanks for correcting! Such vehicles have sound systems designed to project sound ahead of them.

On motorcycles this is commonly called "the horn" and not "the exhaust."

Thought about maybe a R1200RT? Or if you got some bucks, a K1600GT *drool*

Both are fantastic mile eaters
