Got back recently from my first big trip - I went down to Robbinsville, NC and rode 129 and Cherohala Skyway and a bunch of those other roads down there that everyone recommends (they're all good though - even if you get lost), then took the BRP back home. Just felt like sharing some pics. If anyone wants any tips, feel free to ask.

Cute church

Two Wheel Inn in Robbinsville

BRP

Obligatory Mabry Mill pic

Willville Bike Camp in the rain (great place!)

We also stayed at the Switzerland Inn (in Little Switzerland, NC - the room was decent, the food was not so great) - behind it is a road nicknamed "The Diamondback" (226 I believe) - there were tar snakes all over it that made the ride treacherous. I don't recommend taking a spin on it until it gets fixed.

Thank you!

I used a Nikon D700 and a Panasonic Lumix LX-5.

Southwade,
The Oxtar boots didn't fit. PM Riteris if still interested
I said "Dammit" before because I had just bought boots a few days before. I would've got these if my timing was better.

We did most of our exploring in the Robbinsville and Tellico Plains areas and pretty much just stuck straight to the BRP on the way back - we gave ourselves 2 1/2 days to do the BRP and were constrained to that timing b/c of other plans. So I don't really have much to offer for roads around the BRP, unfortunately. As I noted, I don't recommend the Diamondback (it's 226A) if it's in the condition it was in when I went down it. In good shape, that would definitely be a fun road.

I remember the BRP, b/w Asheville and Cherokee, was full of twisties, which was a hoot. And pretty much every pull-off on the BRP, especially toward its southern terminus, was spectacular.

As far as other stuff of note -

All of the restaurants marked on the park map of the BRP were closed to our extreme dismay (including the one at Peaks of Otter). But we enjoyed meals at Woodberry Inn (Meadows of Dan, VA), and Buchanan Grill (Buchanan, VA - just note, the road there from the BRP is not in great shape and consists of back-to-back switchbacks). And if you're in a pinch and you're near Sparta, NC, the Glade Valley Country Store has cheap burgers (and the happiest cook ever).

If you need to stay anywhere, Willville Bike Camp was great. It was cheap, the bathrooms were nice, and everyone there was super chill. We heard some great stories the night we were there. It's right off the BRP - I made the mistake of relying on my Garmin and it took me somewhere else - a nice guy driving an Accord saw us on side of the road and told us where to go and said that GPSs screw up the directions there all the time.

Switzerland Inn was pretty nice. It appeared to be an older hotel that had been renovated recently. Service was really good except dinner service took forever and the food wasn't worth the wait. Breakfast was so-so. But having a restaurant on-site was a big plus.

Weather was all over the place. Some days it was ~85, while one day it was 34 degrees and windy (and we were in summer gear...). Oh and it rained a bit but hopefully, you'll miss that.

Some notes I took while trip planning that may be useful (I didn't actually use these tips since we were tight on time on the BRP so I haven't verified them):

Fancy Gap, VA has some great day rides (around mile marker 200).

Check out Grandfather Mountain in Pisgah National Forest (and Linville Falls and Linville Gorge).

276N to 215S back to the BRP is fun.

43 to Bedford, VA is a good twisty road.

NC 80 south of the BRP is worth checking out.

If you need tips around the Robbinsville area, let me know.

And just to edit this one last time, for anyone looking to do a similar trip, I ordered a set of these maps as an xmas present - in addition to the recommendations on this forum, they were useful in planning the trip - http://www.americaridesmaps.com/ The maps are extremely detailed, annotated, and favorite (paved) roads are highlighted.

Blixa, I rode the Diamondback two weekends ago too just near Little Switzerland. The Tar Snakes were outta this world combined with the rocks and sand scattered by storms.

Wow, thanks so much for taking the time to provide that info. I hope to pay it forward as a result of my trip to the next person.

I have a few days and some flexibility so I will just enjoy the exploration. The only thing I am missing is a cutie riding partner with her own bike.. ...if only I knew someone with such a partner that could provide a referral...if only, if only...

In all seriousness, great pics and thanks for the terrific info...
