Tunnel Route in Illapel, Chile!
Hi folks!
I'm new to the ADVrider forum, and would like to share some pics from a recent short Raid a bunch of 9er TDM owners and a special guest K100RS owner took here in Chile. Its a 650 kms route (roughly 400 miles) of highways, small B roads with excellent sharp curves and dry tarmac to get to the good stuff... 120 kms of dry gravel and sand road which has 4 tunnels of loose gravel, batch holes filled with water and mud, no light or ventilation whatsoever, and ranging between 200 and 1000 meters long! Who knows, maybe some of you will be interested of coming this side of the world for some exciting routes So with out further a-do, the pics Meeting point, we had a Chinese Chopper bike that followed us for a while but then continued to safer roads ![]() You're taking THIS on gravel? ![]() Very nice roads getting to the gravel section... Scenic view of the Cabildo Valley right before the first tunnel View of the Cabildo Valley The machines prior to the first tunnel My beast I insist, ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO PUT THAT ON GRAVEL???? Going into the first tunnel that was something like this ![]() Inside the tunnels, Watch out for the water, mud, loose stones and a Lady who didn't respect the STOP sign on the other side of the tunnel and we bumped into each other some 200 mts inside the tunnel ![]() We made it! First tunnel ok ![]() Looking to the exit of the tunnel, 1000mts of darkness... Now on to more gravel... Not only tunnels but bridges!! More gravel... And more tunnels! To finally end with lunch by the sea... Well folks, that's it! Hope you enyoed the mini Raid. Started out at 9:30 AM, home by 21:00 hrs. A nice day long trip. glad to take you there if come this side of the planet!! ![]() Cheers mates! |

You could laways rent a bike/beast
There are pretty decent Motorcycle rental services in Chile such as http://www.motorider.cl/en/company.html , http://www.motorentchile.com/en_index.htmor http://www.motoaventura.cl/inicio_en.htm
Also you have a small directory which lists motorcycle rentals in Chile as well as Campers, RV and Motorhomes http://www.ridetheworld.com/chilemot...landtours.html Best Regards! PS: I have a KML file of the Raid, at least the gravel part of it.... Do I post it here or elsewhere in the forum? |

Wow! Gorgeous photos of Chile, and looks to be some superb riding. Keep the ride reports coming for those of us that can't make it there any time soon.

Buenisima escapada. Muy entretnida esa ruta; lo mejor, puras pistas rapidas! Eso si, es mas entretenido en una KTM!
Saludos y felicitaciones! |

Well, sure a KTM could beat my TDM on gravel (given the fact I have strictly Tarmac tires, the Metzeler Z4) but I'm sure as h*ll the TDM smokes away any KTM on the curves and twists on the way in and out of the gravel ;)
Cheers Mates! PS I'm planning another day long escape to the dirt on March 5th, stay tuned!

Good source for Chile Maps

Guys, Copec, a chilean petroleum/gas company just came up with a series of booklets for the whole Chile. These are the best for your tank bag or just the best for tourism, roads, tips, etc..... The booklets are divided by areas, North, Central Chile and so on. This is the link. Can be purchased at Copec's gas stations or by internet. http://chileturcopec.cl/zona/arica/destinos/arica
