All of it, but I'd be most interested in the eastern and central areas of northern MN.

There's a nice resort in the Beaver Bay area: Cove Point Lodge. If you stay there you MUST dine at the Northerrn Lights restaurant off of Hwy 61 (maybe a mile North of the lodge)... great food and a true North shore experience at that restaurant.
I'd suggest hitting Hwy 1 going to Ely after that. Hwy 1 is a VERY fun road on a motorcycle (watch out for wildlife, though... I almost hit a WOLF one time ).But I bet plenty of others in here have some good advice too. The North Shore (Hwy 61) is a very popular stretch for motorcycles. I frequent the area... probably half a dozen times a year. |

OOps! Just saw the "rustic" part in your post.
Cove Point Lodge is not too rustic. How about Breezy Point on Lake Superior: http://www.breezyonsuperior.com/ It's just outside Two Harbors. Very cool place! |

I really like that area....did some hunting in the castle danger area a looooong time ago. Also had a working assignment last year in Ely.....time to take the GSA up there and do the dirt roads....need to get her dirty...

Up in the Lutsen/Grand Marais area along the North Shore there is the Solbakken Resort, Cascade Lodge, and then north of GM is the Naniboujou Lodge. Staying at these places is time traveling. You have private baths/running water & such but its like the 1950's. No flat screen TV's with 300 HD channels or anything like that. As for motorcycle friendly if you mean right off the paved highway, yeah all those places qualify but, if you're looking for a heated garage you won't get that. Here's some links, all these places are rustic but comfortable (no outhouse
, it ain't that bad up here). Lots of nice resturants. MN 61, MN 1 and MN 2 are all paved as is the Gunfllint Trail. If you're traveling in season I recommend reservations. If you're just off season you can usually find something reasonable and relatively rustic on short notice. Sorry I can't help much with central MN.Do you have any questions about far Northern Wisconsin? http://www.naniboujou.com/ http://www.solbakkenresort.com/ http://www.cascadelodgemn.com/ http://www.lutsenresort.com/ |
