PHX- Sunflower Mine - WOW!

After a couple weeks of dirt bike riding, I thought that I'd check out an easy route (according to my 4x4 book) to get reacquainted with my big 950.

We started at the weekly Southwest Dual Sport Riders gathering, at Starbucks! Grande Chai anyone??

There were 2 rides going out today. DR650Eddy and AleThor were heading northwest and the Nightstalker crew of Cyberdos and kbblue would be following me to the northeast.

Today's riders, from left to right, Cyberdos, DR650Eddy, AleThor, Nightstalker, kbblue. Photo by Chick4KLRs.

BIKES!

Ride leader extraordinaire, DR650Eddy.

I made a classic faux pas of showing up for a ride on fumes. So, we stopped for some gas at the first opportunity. What's the big deal with that?? This guy comes up and asks if we could give him a hand? A hand with what?? Oh, well, he has this Ducati, into which he must place super gas for it to run properly. Apparently, super gas comes in 5 gallon blue steel drums, that don't readily pour into Ducati gas tanks. Cyberdos MacGyver's up a solution that will get this fellow back on the 101 loop in no time!

Many miles and many tens of minutes later, we neared our destination.

And finally the pavement ended. Just the type of dirt I was hoping for, devoid of hugh, monsterous, boulders.

That nice smooth dirt sure didn't last long. The first climb wouldn't be ranked easy in any book I'd write. It was more of an intermediate. We continued on.

Cyberdos on his DR650.

kbblue get the first video of the day on his KLR650.

Great mountains!

The trail rating increase rapidly, as did our altitude. Leading the way (photos by Cyberdos)

And as leader, I showed the boys the delicate art of crashing.

A little break after our first rocky and wet section.

LMMFAO!!

I couldn't stop laughing. As he's telling us about how the Duc needs race fuel to run properly I ask him where he rides. He tells me that he likes to do "The Loop". I've ridden a lot of gems here but I can't remember which was labeled "The Loop". I believe Terry is thinking the same so before I could step in he asks what the loop is.

"The Loop", he says. The 101 loop.

(for those who don't live here, the 101 loop is a straight highway with absolutely no twisties and littered with speed cams, a gazillion cagers and half of it is under construction)

Ridiculous.

I had to scratch my head a bit to figure this one out. I was thinking; technically, it's doable...

Ok, go left, go right, go left. That should work.

kbblue

Cyberdos

I said left, right, left!! Not left, right, right.

And then there was this really nice bridge???

Once we got out of the creek, the road tamed down a bit.

And then there was this hole in the side of the mountain!

There was a little birdie in mine shaft.

Sunflower mine.

kbblue heading down.

Mecury was the Sunflower's claim to fame. Condenser's stand tall.

kbblue arrives.

Cyberdos

kbblue checks out the long steel rod mill used to tumble the cinnabar into a fine powder.

Massive reduction gears.

Mutant mecury enhanced Godzilla sized lizards abound!

Checking it out!

That couldn't have ended well.
