Ok so for anyone wondering, you do infact have to get it inspected before recieving plate if trying to register a bike that has a offroad title. I just sent out title and registration forms plus vin verification and check for my xr650r and I got a letter back saying I need to get it inspected to verify it meets vermont highway standards. Looks like im taking a trip to vermont

You will need the above form filled out by a VT motorcycle inspector. I was confused by the reason because it seems like it is for salvaged or wrecked vehicles, but if the MSO says off road only then its a classification change. To get the inspection done the bike needs to have all of the required safety items; DOT headlight, tail light, brake light, left side mirror, horn, and DOT tires. Turn signals weren't required.

I was able to get my VIN verification done right at the DMV,,,, they weren't busy and it was a nice day so the clerk didn't mind going out to check.

Bikes under 300cc's don't get a title.

Every vehicle I've ever registered in VT got a plate before it was inspected. Sometimes you just use the inspection sticker it came with if it's still valid & you don't even go to get an inspection for the better part of a year.

Not sure if things are changing over there but a friend registered his 2010 390 Berg over there at the beginning of the year. He needed the form that I linked and the inspection to get the form signed. He got a title. Last month I registered the exact bike and needed the inspection also. But the clerk handed my MSO back to me and told me that they don't give titles for under 500cc's. She asked another clerk who looked it up. The website still says 300.

Anyone have any information on the salvage under 300cc motorcycle, do you have to bring the vehicle to Vermont to get inspected or can I do it here in NY? From what I understand they need to do the check there.

I have done the "Vermont thing" to get two of
My bikes plated. Download and print the registration form and the odometer statement. Fill them out, sign them, have the seller sign them and mail them and a check into Montpellier and wait For you plate to come in the mail. Don't forget To include the tax amount in your check. Call the DMV to calculate your tax amount and believe it a real person answers. It's so easy it feels like it shouldn't work. But it does. Even with an out state address you can be riding around with a VT tag and best part is, no need to go to the DMV.

What bikes did you have done? Were they motorcycle or ATV plates?

To answer my own question, I just called them, they told me they don't care about the bike being salvage as long as its not stolen and under 300cc's. My salvage bike was rebuilt anyway and has everything it needs to be legal in any state. I also called to get the NADA price, they quoted me the dealer trade in value over the phone, super easy to do. Great thread

Ok. I've successfully registered 4 under 300cc street bikes thru VT. They had no titles, but were street motorcycles and their VINs would have indicated that.

If I send in the application for a plate for a 294cc dirt bike (KLX300) or KDX 200 with a VIN that indicates that it's an off road vehicle, is there a good chance I'll get the plate and registration first, followed by a request to have it inspected in VT?

I'm going to try it anyway, but would appreciate hearing from someone who's actually done it.... recently.

Thanks !
