Cool2 Test Riding the new Royal Enfield Continental GT

24 January 2014

On the ride to India Bike Week from Bombay to Goa, I got to test ride Royal Enfield's new Continetal GT. And I have to say, I'm really impressed. All other Enfields are nice bikes but they have some quirks that you either love or hate. This bike on the other hand is made quite differently and feels well put-together. It's not suited at all for bumpy roads but for sporty riding, it's fantastic. They got the café racer styling down and the bike handles really well. It's got a single cylinder 535 cc and that seems enough to provide for a thrilling ride. I got some excellent GoPro footage from my ride and hopefully will put together a clip soon.

Ted Simon and a Harley

January 28, 2014

This sums up Ted Simon's view of Harleys.

On the Helmet Stories 'Ride with the Legends' from Bombay to Goa for India Bike Week, Harley-Davidson, being a major sponsor of the event, wanted Sir Ted to ride this new Sporster Super Low. He took one spin on it, jumped off and said, 'Jay, you ride the Harley, I'm riding the Enfield.' The seating position is not kind to the knees and the handlebar position isn't the best. But, I'm good at riding anything on two wheels fast, so I enjoyed the Harley with its torquey engine and well-balanced chassis; first time to ride a belt-driven bike! Its super short suspension kept bottoming out on the rough coastal roads we were on and I resorted to standing on the pegs and riding it like a dirt bike. Ted quipped that India is the only place where you can ride off-road on tarmac

Finally caught up with the ride. Missed catching up with you when you were in Bangalore. How was it at the India Bike festival? Some of us kinda keep away since it is a big Harley event

Yes, what a pleasure to ride with him. He's so humble and simple and can still ride crazy roads at 82!

IBW was good. Yes, there's a big harley presence but they're trying to get more serious and have more travellers there. It's only their second year, so I think it's going in the right direction. I heard first year didn't go so well but they've learnt from that. This year all bikes were welcome inside.

Here's some press on my trip in today's Times of India, Chennai edition. Gave this interview at India Bike Week and it mentions my first overland motorcycle trip, Chicago to Eastern Canada in 2005, and it ends with what I'm planning next... launching soon

.... met Ted Simon at a BMW rally 10 years ago .... indeed he is humble, and gave me a few minutes of his time - best line -

"Don't go to Tierra del Fuego .... go to Brazil, it's such a pretty country!"

So very true. Brazil as a whole is such a beautiful country, the people, the steaks, the beach, the weather, mmm, oh yeah and the women

Press: Interview with Rediff.com

28 February 2014

Here's an interview I did with Rediff.com, the oldest and one of the largest news portals in India.

An excerpt: "What would you consider the best moment of this marathon trip? That would have to be when I realised, about six months into my trip, somewhere in Brazil, that the reputation of my chicken curry was preceding me."
