Subscribed and looking forward to updates, great work!

This was my first bike. Actually a 82 cb900c. I now have access to another that could be mine. I was recently talking to my uncle who has one (I sold him mine, he ended up selling it and later on ended up getting another, mine is still being driven and I kind of hope to get it back someday) about my xl250r rebuild and he asked if I would be interested in taking a look at his and fixing it for him. He would pay for parts and give me part of the proceeds as he wants to sell. This thread has got me thinking I may just buy it from him. He has a bad back and doesn't enjoy riding anymore. I don't really know what the issues, although he thinks it's the timing chain. It starts but I haven't heard it run. Could be a winter project.

You probably already know this but there is a user group and message board for these on Yahoo.

Bump to this thread. Great restoration project. Where did you find out about the coil upgrade/mod? Looks like it might work for my Honda Ascot the next time I have to replace the coils (hopefully in about 20 years!).

Any updates? You motivated me to tear down my Honda TLR200 Reflex.
Did the Laquer on the polished parts work out. Eastwood has a special spray but it is $20 a can.

Also, Lesson learned, Pine Sol is a good paint stripper!

I don't mean to resurrect a dead thread, but is there any news on this rebuild? I just got a couple of '83 CB1000c's (one running and one for parts) and I'm looking to do the exact same project x2!

Amazing thread and thank you for sharing this with us...
Early this year I came across a CB1000 Custom that had been stored in a garage for 6 years and I went for it and bought it. Dropped the oil, put fuel in the tank and put a new battery on it and it started first time. :o)

Its now on the road but finding it very difficult to find parts for it, can anyone recommend a good source on the net that will ship to the UK for me?

Question Honda CB1000 Custom

Hello everyone,

Please let me know if anyone has encountered difficulty starting the engine, after a long run, and when the engine is up to temp. The problem I get is that when pressing the start button, the engine turns over very slowly, as though the battery is nearly flat, but if left an hour or more to cool off, the engine starts first time?

Anyone have any ideas

Valve cover issue

I've really enjoyed reading this link. It's been a great find. Great pictures. Thanks for sharing.

If you are still around I would like to know if you've ever run into a leaking valve cover gasket but only at the tachometer connection. I have removed the cover, cleaned it reinstalled it with new gaskets, but it leaks when the engine oil heats up. Could it be an oil pressure built-up? I drained the overflow but still leaks.

Any ideas?

It's been a while, but I believe the DOHC Hondas of that era have an o-ring and an oval rubber seal/gasket at the tachometer cable connection. Did you replace both of those?

I've had three D.O.H.C.'s, they all leaked at the tach drive seal.
