I just found out from the race secretariat, there are 75 bikes and quads entered, with another 20 additional competitors last minute applications now being processed, so we are almost up to 100 bikes for the 2010 Dos Sertões

Mark Coma, David Casteu, Ze Helio, Antonio Narino and a few other riding gods are all in. It was quite cool that in the same sentence the names Dave Peckham and Phil Bowman also popped up! No pressure Dave & Phil, it's apparently expected that you both will be serious contenders for the winners title this year

Interestingly, Cyril Despres did not register.... Im not that convinced he will be riding with KTM either, despite what peeps have been saying, after this year's spat with Coma seeing that Coma is now managing the KTM factory team. The plot thickens...I guess we will all know whats happening in a couple of months.

That is one beautiful bike.

I was originally hoping to ride a BMW450, but Im a noob, and there was a distinct lack of interest from all the motorad outlets I spoke to. Also, they have not been all that reliable, remember Frans Verhofen's drama on the 13th stage of the Dakar. This bike I think is the new generation, so hopefully will be more reliable. I will have a look see, and hopefully get some pics of Jose's bike up close.

Im still training doing laps on the MX circuit, against the advice of a number of guys But I insist I'm taking it very easy, very low risk stuff, focusing on not jumping more than a couple of metres and just getting into the excersize inder the belt. Ive found riding the track slowly is a lot more tiring than doing it at speed. Maybe its just me.

I'm squeezing in around 25 laps/day. It leaves me pretty tired. I've worn out two sets of tyres in as many weeks; my chain and sprockets as well as the rear bearings on my practice bike. Lots of pain, but plenty of gain. I'm feeling very fit and ready for this. Im considering going over to some intesive gym now over the next 5-7 days, and then that will be it. Nothing more to do but R & R for the last couple of days before flying out to Brazil on the 4th August and pick up the support vehicles. Then its going to be 3 days of bike prep, testing fuel, setting up the support vehicles and acclimatising before we go into Scrutineering on the 7th.

You should do fine Neil, just remember to rein it in a little near the beginning of the rally to get your wits about you before you start amping it up too much. Patrick Trahan, the only Canadian to finish the Dakar this year gave me the advice along with an excellent story of his crash on day 2 at over 100kmh.

Thanks brother, I appreciate the encouragement. Is that story written up somewhere? I'd love to give it a read.

Anyway I plan to take it easy, and get to the finish. As you know, its battle between the heart and the mind, but its a long rally, and my biggest concern is having the energy to keep it up in the latter part of the rally when its maybe not so fun anymore. I think that will keep it all in perspective.

Its awesome that Jonah is with you on the Mongolia rally. Having someone like that around will be inspirational I am sure.

You know what? It didn't even occur to me to write that encounter up as a story but I damned well should, he had some good ones. Maybe I'll try to write something tonight on my 16 hour boat ride home?

I hear you on trying to keep focus on the big picture of trying to get to the end.

As for Jonah, I'm looking forward to more of his dry humour, he's good buddies with Mike so that should make it friendly and casual right from the start. Mike is also hoping to glean good tips from him as am I.

Yep, 111 is a cool No.

Im so chuffed - I finished my last day of riding training without damaging myself! Ive been doing 50 loops on an MX circuit per day, limiting the possibility of crashing to some extent. Even then there is a risk. On Thursday I managed to lose concentration and came off on a landing after a jump. Still, Im glad I did it, the muscle memory of riding should give me an edge on the recommended route of spending the last few weeks in a gym.















Of course I couldnt resist hitting a couple of the nearby hills as well. ;D





Im feeling really good. My recovery period is satisfyingly short. I can relax now. On Tuesday night we fly to Brasilia. Wednesday we pick up the support vehicles, meet our American friends, and then drive through to the start city of Goiania 250km away. On Thursday, we get our bikes delivered and can start preparations for scrutineering on Sunday. In eight days (Tuesday 9nth August), we will start the racing on the Super Prime circuit in front of a few thousand spectators to determine starting times the first stage the next day. Then its 4,500km of racing for the following 10 days.
