That was a great trip guys!

The San Benito Board of Supervisors is voting today to reopen
the access roads into Clear Creek. If it goes, I'm thinking about
a little camp/ride down that way here soooon.

A few pics from Carrizo

Egg-zackly.

I just really question whether that is even legal to not allow a street-legal motorcycle in, yet it's ok for 4X4 and quad-riding shepherds.

That ain't right...

It would be funny if someone modified the signs...

"Street legal four wheel vehicles OK
Rick Cooper not OK"

Upon review of the 2007 Hollister Resource Management Plan, I must correct my statement to you over the phone. The Panoche and Tumey's are closed to motorcycle travel. This is carryover from the 1984 RMP which closed the area to motorcycle use.

2007 RMP Transportation Decision.

TRANS-COM5. Limit vehicle use in the Panoche/Tumey and Griswold Hills to four-wheel drive street legal vehicles on designated routes from the beginning of upland game season to April 15. Allow foot access all year round.

Please call if you have question. Sorry for the confusion. We will update our signs in the area for the public. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Now if I drive my dads 57 chevy there for a photo shoot I cant becasue its not 4x4? I think we need to really get this decision involved in the clear creek process... It has got to be one of the most idiodic rules ever..

a carry over rule from back in the day when hill climbing was the rage from kettleman hills to holister.. the area is very very special and has major fossils but this nazi istic rule is moronic..

rant off

Nice photos... maybe A ride out there next week to ride thru Clear creek!

San Benito County Roads in CCMA

note date of that post, but I just wanted to point out that if the county reclaims control of all their roads and opens them, there is a nice bit of riding on them alone...

The roads won't be open til the signage goes up, and best case scenario for that happening is 2 weeks. Even then, the roads might need some maintenance and clearing due to some supposed landslide action. There is a volunteer effort underway, I think, but it might be awhile. It also wouldn't suprise me to see some action on BLM's part to try to delay/prevent the process from happening at all. I have a hard time believing they're going to take this lying down since they've been so incredibly hell bent on getting it closed off completely.

County Roads thru Clear Creek ...

Wonderful news about San Benito Supervisors voting to open the county roads that have been closed ...

We were through there in November of 2009, because we didn't think the Clear Creek closure included county roads on the Triple A map, or that if it did, there would have been signs that made that clear, or locked gates [there were not, and it was a weekday, so we got through from New Idria west to Coalinga Road] ...

I'd been through there years ago in an '81 Toyota Carrolla ... according to Larry at the Panoche Inn the road has not been maintained for many, many years, and in November '09, I certainly would not want to drive a car through it, but it was no problem on a loaded KLR with D606s ...

Sounds like it may have deteriorated further since then ...

It was a fantastic dual sport road in November ...

See you out there!

I don't know if I would blame Rick Cooper for this, all he is doing is enforcing the "...2007 Hollister Resource Management Plan..."

Best way to take care of such issues is to give input at the plan reviews. While we were at Charrizo Plains we talked to a BLM guy there in great detail about such things. One thing of interest is that each and every (unique) concern must be addressed by the review board. Trick is then to submitt unique conccerns serpertely to get more exposure!

Hi .... just FYI, I rode Panoche Rd today as well as up to New Idria, and the trailheads into the various Panoche/Griswold/Tumey Hills areas have signs that clearly state that plated motorcycles and ATVs are not allowed at all. But the signs also state that only "full size" 4x4's are allowed. First, if it's really to mitigate trail damage, who's going to enforce drivers actually engaging 4WD on part-time rigs? Second, what's a "full size" 4x4? Only F150's or Dodge Rams, no Rangers or Dakotas? How about Subarus or an AWD minivan? I also picked up a map, which only stated that vehicles must be street legal.

It was hot as hell out there but Panoche Road was fun ... as was Little Panoche. Absolutely no traffic for hours. It's so brown and dry out there due to our dry spring, that it's hard to believe this is only 80 miles from my home in Santa Cruz.
