Renner... I'm looking at the air mixture and idle adjuster screwws on what I assume is your bike....
...were my carbs adjusted like that, I'd be idling at 2500 rpm and lean enough to hole a piston....

yeah, /3... gotta wonder.

You'll agree it's best not to adjust carbs by appearances.

Mine idles around 800-1000 and slightly rich.

On the Flip Side

Leaky exhaust... I bought new crush nuts, cleaned the header threads and was REAL careful NOT to overtighten....
apparently it didn't quite seat correctly....
...both sides....
how much do you think that will affect performance? I thought it seemed loud...

How does one get everything sucked up tight?

It should suck up tight over a couple of heat cycles, I presume. Snug it up, run it for a bit, snug it up in a day or two, run it. etc.

as horrifying as this may appear to a person such as yourself... I'm making my exhaust system shiny

...and I remember asking you, when I was a youngster....how much does a sloppy exhaust connection affect how the bike runs???....

...and you shrugged your shoulders and said..." ehhhh...."

So this time...I'm gonna mount the headers FIRST... then fit everything else down the line....
Think it'll make a diff?

Thats a good idea. you'll probably find you have to loosen up the front stuff when the back mounts wont line up, but what the heck? I think I've since learned that the bike will run just fine (maybe sound farty) on some exhaust leaks, and if the thing sounds too bad or runs too bad, then find the pisser. THey sure do heat up and cool down over a greater range than the other parts generally do though.

I think the point is....
I've got wee ponies at best.
Sealing the intake side is good.
Whaddabout the other side?

Sealing the other side ist auch gut.
Aber only so much as is required, not wanting to risk galled exhaust spigot threads.

best to snug the nuts. If you find there's leakage then snug a little more.
but you know this... not going to free ponies appreciably, just good practice.

have you checked the two mating surfaces for flatness using plate glass and feeler guages?
It looks to me like you could improve the exhaust seal by sanding one or both surfaces flat

Has the lack of sealing at the exhaust header to spigot junction been resolved?
