Googled Toymakers... whoa! I was hoping it was closer, but after reading the Yelp reviews, it might be worth it as a destination, from faraway Rhode Island....

That'd be one long day from RI.
Toymakers is a cozy little rest, in a cozy little town, and if you hit it right, there'll be a coupla dozen classics out in the yard and buzzin' around the countryside. It's only a hop, skip and a jump over to Lime Rock. The scenery is great and folks are friendly. If your comin', gimme a shout, I'd love to meet up!

Last night I read this thead start to the last post!
An interesting thread...
First a factoid.. the first /2 units were built after 1960. I have a 1960 R50 and was informed it was the "old style" engine.. one item is the oiling on the skirt on the right cylinder was not provided an oil gallery until the /2 and the /2 engine block is a bit beefier.. anyway.. I have read this thread with great interest. My bike was within the last 500 R50's built. I aquired it in 1997 and it was a neglected garage find.. not running and just rolling at the time. It appeared to have been well used. I did a cosmedic resto.. fenders, chrome, tank all repainted and stripped. Then I collected parts and replaced all questionable items, new rubber etc.. then it sat in pieces for about 11 years while my attention was on other projects.. I must have moved it from at least 3 storage areas.... I did not know it, but I was waiting for a catalyst..... My son, ... said.. Pop.. I bought a bike.. why don't you assemble the beemer and let's go riding.. that was 2008. So I picked up on the challenge.. and collected all the parts and engine frame from storage and brought it home to my shop... and started the journey.. The engine has good compression and the tranny clicked on all the gears.. and didn't make any strange noises... over the years annually I would squirt some LPS in to the cylinders and crank it over a couple of times.. 'Yes good compression!' and leave it at that.. So I assembled the bike and named it "HANZ".. I bit down hard and bought new headers and mufflers. I also knew that on startup he would smoke abit.. The first failure was the bing carb brass 7g floats... small cracks and did not float.. after I got the flooding problem, ( more like carb bathing) corrected with new floats.. He burped on the second crank and started on the fourth pull.. smookyy.. Then all was well. So, a bit of tuning and adjustment then, I just rode Hanz on sunny days in Sunny southeast Alaska... ... that means.. mostly summer.. All seemed well, no smoke, no strange noises.. all seemed well...but.. I had slinger guilt.... I just knew.. this bike was used and used and I think the speedo is lying... the bike a 1960 the speedo was stamped 1962.. so I did not trust it.. and what about it being disconnected for a while before the PO put in the 62 unit...the road grit factor was working on me.. the speedo said 18K but I knew it was a lie. I decided in the fall 2010 that it had to be checked and corrected, as well I was concerned about the old heads, and valve seats, guides..etc The engine was pulled and shipped to a rebuilder in Olympia WA.. the report back.. was.. not to bad.. BUT.. the engine was not a virgin.. slingers were not that bad.. but the carrier bearings were not correctly installed and the replaced bearing were undersize and so forth.. At the end of the day the engine was a total rebuild. the crank had to be rechromed and all new bearings placed. The heads were reworked with new valves, guides, springs and seats. It is still winter here in SE ALASKA and I am waiting on a solo seat setup before I do a startup.. but it is just about ready to go. Hanz' core will be good to go.. I work slow.. am thinking March or April. this is a hell of a read! I am an almost /2 guy. Jim, Ketchikan, Alaska |

Next I installed the core to Hanz.
So I pushed it up the steps and began to install the engine..
I wanted to do it all by my self.. done.. with just one little scrape on the paint.. that damn breather... The bikes are never done and a work in progress that you ride. jim, ketchikan, alaska |

Almost?
Jim,
It's still very much winter here in SE NY! My rug is threadbare from walking around in little circles watching it snow! If snow shovelin' were an Olympic Sport, I'd have me a pile of Gold Medals by now. Soon... As that is one of your first posts, I highly recommend you continue. You've covered more important stuff in a couple of paragraphs than I've been able to do in 35 pages. ![]() I'd love to see all your photo's, and I've many questions regarding your [re]build. It looks fantastic. Don't be so modest, sounds like you've been a /2 guy for quite a while

Thanks for the welcome guys..
It all became apparent on day, last summer when I was cruising out on the Point Higgins Road.. the only road on the island where you can see an actual 55 mph legal sign.. so, I said,, ok Hanz, "lets go 55". So I rolled on the throttle and we hit 50 and all was good.. then at about 54 mph.. on the speedo the engine speed started to rise and the bike did not go any faster...and there was a never before felt buzzing vibrations... whow... what was that and I backed off.. Ok Hanz,, one more time... roll on 50 then 52,53, 54.. then revs and vibs... ok, we will not go 55 Hanz.. I got home and congitated abit about it.. what is it.. the clutch is slipping.. so that is what brought the slinger guilt to full tilt..I now have three reasons.. horrid slinger guilt... a slipping clutch. and most likely a valve job.. good to go.. now to sell it to honey.. "hey honey, I want to send the Hanz engine to the doctor..for these reasons... what do you think.." Honey says,, yeah ok.. what a lucky guy am I. The other side of the story is that when I pulled the engine and tranny apart.. I undid the pressure plate and pulled the clutch.. it was swimming in gear oil...what... where did this gear oil come from... dah.... So it is a journey of doings and misdoings... yeah I added oil to the gearbox and made it level with the filler hole... well, wrong.. there is a correct amount.. in CC's it is listed in the manual.. I over filled the unit and the gear oil migrated past the famous little flattened and hard felt and splashed on to the clutch plate.. The clutch felt real silky on the release... , little did I know..I have discovered over Maintainance.. I have been hear before. Pop always said.. if it isn't broke,,, then don't fix it.. ( I have never fully subscribed to this advice and have run into trouble because of it.) Well, I am my own fool... DO NOT over fill the gear box.. check the book for exact capacity.. Anyway, as it turns out it didn't really matter as the friction plate was moving on the rivits and quite warn. The friction plate was shot and worn beyond spec.. It was ready for replacement. It seems like this is always the way things happen to me.. I am saved from the absolute catastrophic failure once again. so that is the rest of that story... Next time I will tell you about timing the magnito...that is an adventure in its self.. Next week I get back to my mainframe with some better pictures. Jim, Ketchikan, Alaska

Gertiektn,
You're welcome to post here anytime you want. I welcome your input as I always hoped this thread would become a homely set of Cliffnotes, detailing how to, and how not to, keep a /2 running, and as an active member of the Family! I'm into the whole mindset that these things create. SlingerGuilt ![]() Fear Of Impending Cost ![]() Restore VS Renew ![]() How Much Is My Bike Worth? To you?
