Clean the contacts on the bottom, too. Intermittent contact means arcing means carbon buildup means high resistance. Disconnect the battery and with the key in, measure resistance between the 2 contacts. You want zero ohms, not 5 ohms or God forbid 5k ohms.

Pop quiz 2!

My initial hunch was correct! My shaft is, and always WILL be, sufficiently long to make the desired contact with the awaiting switch!!
I pulled cover this morning, and at the perfunctory first glimpse, I STILL could not determine the root cause of my sparkus interruptus....
And I remembered Golden Rule # 1, when dealing with electrical gremlins...
WIGGLE YOUR WIRE!!!!

And so it was...

The wire lead from the 46 year old Bosch Condenser, with 66,000 miles on it finally broke off'n the handsoldered can... the stiff old braided copper#16 was still resting near it's sweet spot, and though she was a bit miffed, she was still enjoying the spark of excitement from the old can. She just wasn't getting it as often...
But once again, she took me home!
She's a good girl.....
Just so happens I had a fresh STANDARD brand FD77 condenser for a 1972 Ford Torino 428, in my secret stash!
Stuck it in there, and received bunches of love...steady...slow...solid....love.
I picked up another one just in case the piece of crap Bosch decided to finally roll over and die....
But I'll never buy another one of those Bosch condensers' again!!!!
Vech won't even sell those things anymore! They're HANDMADE. The soldering could damage the coil, rendering it useless! After 46 years...
POS!!!!!!!
Which leads us to WHY I'll never buy one of those again...
POP QUIZ II!
WHERE was this condenser made?????????

What I lack in cleverness and mystery, I make up for in sheer verbosity!

And don't think for a minute that I'm not going to solder a new wire onto that thing. With 50/50 lead!

I wonder if the one I have that says Made in Germany is before the wall or after unification.

I've heard, that a set of points will last just about forever in these bikes. Why would that happen? 6V's? Magneto Driven?

Ride Report 1

So it was like the first real ride of of '011. I play tag and there was one waiting around since winter, so with 70 degrees beckoning, off we go.
When I turn on Jezebel, she's still returning the favor.
I've got more weepage from the ticklers, than in the past, and I think I need to address the needles and seats.
I tightened up the exhaust over winter and that sounds good. Much quieter, which allows me to hear... more valve train noise than I'd like, but I've just been lazy and pretty much ignored the valve adjustment. I checked 'em 4 times last year and they ran 6 and 8 everytime.
Fresh tire out back, new halogen bulb up front, and we're rolling sweet.

Made the tag, and was coming home. Rolling down the hill into Ellenville...35 mph. The old geezer in the white minivan can't wait any longer to pull out on to Rt 209 from the right. Watched me coming ALL the way down the hill. I could see him, watching me...and JUST before I reached him he guns it....
I had just adjusted the rear brake linkage, and replaced the front brake cable.
I locked up the rear, and came close to locking the front, while still trying to maneuver into the side street, while trying to avoid hooking the front wheel into his rear bumper as he's accelerating onto the hiway. He of course, looks up in amazement, at the motorcycle SO close, and almost decides to stop his maneuver...but doesn't and nails it. Had he stopped I would have broadsided him. I missed the rear bumper by an inch. I had the feeling that had I been 5 feet further down the road he would have pulled out and t boned me, and run me over.
The poor woman out walking her dog on the sidewalk almost had a heart attack as I came to a stop next to her at the intersection. She'd seen the whole thing.
Some guy pulls next to me.
Are you OK? Did he hit you? I was two cars back and saw the whole thing...I've got his plate number if you wanna call the cops....!
Dood! I appreciate that very much. But unfortunately, shit like that happens all to frequently. I'm OK
I will use this story to expound at length on the merits and shortcomings of /2 braking systems, but not right at the moment...
I will also use this experience to discuss the laxative powers of motorcycling in general, but not right at the moment.
So , I'm rollin' back up 209 at 55mph, and a pickup decides to take the left turn across my lane, blinker on, see's me at the last second and swerves back into his lane...I know he saw my full salute, and I kept an eye out behind me waiting for him to chase me down, pissed off that I, had given him the finger...
It was a nice 120 mile ride. I live near a major bridge crossing and have to pay the toll...been doing it for years...I now fold the $1 bill into the buckle on my gauntlet and whip it out with a flourish to impress the ladies
Wearing ATGATT has it's disadvantages, when digging out bills at a busy tollbooth...
I hand the Attendant, the $1 bill, folded twice, to which he announces...
"We don't accept rolled bills...!"
...really?.....Well, you just took that one! Dickhead!!!
Oh yeah, I got bruced on the tag

Whew!,, I hope your encounter excitement is now over for this year.

Hey, thanks.. KetchikaN, will continue my research... and the poster asking about GAS..
I was at the local fuel deal here in town and asked about 100 octane leaded gas for Hanz..
He said yeah, we have it.. It is Beaver Gas.. ??Beaver Gas??
Yeah, he says all the airplanes.. Beavers, Cessna's and Pipers use it.
Go get it at the Blue pump.. oh, the joys of small town living..
Did you know that we have more Beaver float planes in Ketchikan than in any other town in America? Just so you know.. yes. We don't have any bridges..so we got Beavers..

Anyway, if you have and old engine that requires leaded fuel,, head for the local airport.

Been away and am stuck on a mountain in British Columbia spring skiing with the grand kids..

Jim,Ketchikan,,, KN???? huh.

Glad you didn't end up as a fender smear Dan.
Watch out for those Bozos. It's warming up and all the snowbirds are thawing or heading back from Florida. Beware. Be very very ware.

Your commentary is always my favorite part of the thread.

School me on what "got bruced" means.

Bruce

You must be familiar with the tag o rama games, being played across the globe. One person tales a photo of their bike at a certain location, and someone else has to find it, and be the first to post a picture of THEIR bike at the tag location, and so it goes. Competition is fierce, {sometimes}, and it's one of the best excuses around to get on your bikes and RIDE!
Legend has it, that there was a guy named Bruce, who would consistently post his claim to fame, AFTER someone else had "gotten the tag".
He was Bruced, he got bruced, he received a brucing, he bruces easily...
I've a buddy who delicately refers to it as "the silver"...
It's kinda like, whoever rides slower, and isn't paying attention as much, gets bruced...second best...not taking the cute cheerleader to the prom, kissin' yer sister...
I rode for 4 hours yesterday, to get a tag that had laid dormant four months over the winter, only to discover someone else had claimed the tag an hour earlier...I was bruced.
This has of course, led me to contemplate the Nature of Bruce.

The brucings will continue, until morale improves!

I had the same thing happen on my R50; all of a sudden starts missing and running rough, but idled fine. I soldered the wire back on in-situ without issue. Oh, by the way, the ideal mixture for lead solder is 63/37 and is called the eutectic mixture if memory serves. With that 70/30 is much easier to find, and for most applications is plenty good.

In NY, you can't find anything with lead in it. It's all "lead free". Except for my secret stash of 50/50, cause the lead free shit doesn't work.
