Crotch Rocket

When in the course of Human Events it becomes necessary to pick up the Conductor of the Orchestra, at Newark Liberty International Airport, and transport him to the Hudson Valley for the weekend’s performance , then it shall be so...and it was.
One usually thinks of “The Maestro”, as an empirical, classically “cast in bronze” kinda guy... Not so our conductor!
Young gun, real person, who just happens to be musically brilliant....and needs a ride from the airport.
The Maestro and I are cruising up the Taconic State Parkway, (a magnificent road for bike riding) in the Jeep Sahara, from Newark.
I'm telling him about my l'il old 65’ BMWR60/2, how I got it, and had to fix it up, and riding it, etc.,all about how it's old and slow...and not like one of them "crotch rockets"...
He laughs. He'd never heard the term before...
...you know...fancy paint job, big tires and will go 160 mph?....
He nods knowingly....
Five minutes later...
wwwwwuuuuuaaaaaAAAAAAA!!!!!!........
A kid on a Ninja passes us at about 85-90.....
Randy looks at me.."crotch rocket?..."
Yup!!
It’s a gorgeous Spring day in the Hudson Valley...sorely needed. But still a bit cold, 38 degrees.
“I’ll betcha he’s freezin’ his noogies off....at that speed.”
We watch him take the big sweeping downhill left by Fauncestock State Park and nail it, leaned over, up by the entrance to Cold Spring and 301.... poetry in rapid motion...

....As were ALL the lights on the NYS Troopers Squad Car, lighting up to greet our hero as he came around the bend. He was parked on the side of the road just around the curve......waiting.

.... "Yessir.....that’s a Crotch Rocket"!
We watch the Trooper pull the kid over, and as we pass The Conductor shouts, "Crime doesn't PAY, Muthafucka!"
I laughed. I'd never heard the Maestro use that term before!

You can rarely hear them cussing over the horns and percussion sections.

Slinger guilt

This is from about 15 years ago. I don't think I'd have let this happen if they were called Centrifugal Sludge Trap instead of Oil Slinger. I've saved the parts to remind me what could happen. And because I can't save my exhaust.

That shiny GROOVE down the middle shouldn't be there.

Hanz is awake.

After an eight month snooze... He's alive again..
Slinger service that turned into a rebuild.. all new bearing, slingers clean, new rings, top end rebuild. New clutch installed and splines lubed.
Just added gas and took on the third flip.. some adjusting and checking.. seemed the timing was not quite right... so I checked it and readjusted, and set with a timing light.

Tweeked and adjusted and runs good but is hard starting when hot. Just tinkering and trying to sort out. Am finding all the loose fastners... my clutch adjuster was not locked well and while riding the lever went slack.
Just a quick fix and locked down the 10 mm locking nut.

The picture is looking out Nichols Passage about two miles from my house on my first ride. It is beginning to look like spring in SE Alaska.
