Float needles

I decided to pull my floats/needles for a closer looksee...

Pretty cruddy, but the floats were good. Just gently remove the needle and immerse in a bowl of water. No bubbles! Good for another 46 years.
Tough to tell about the needles though. Maybe a good cleaning?
I stuck em in the drill press and gently touched 'em with some 400 grit.

There now, MUCH better! I think I can see a miniscule wear ring on the steel needle. It was so crappy I couldn't even see what it was made of...I just kinda ASSUMED it was brass like the float. So that needle plugs the brass inlet fitting in the carb top. If anything gets worn it'll be the fitting. Put it back together and gave her a quickie fire up. No leaky yet...didn't get a real test ride though as it hasn't stopped snowing or raining for 5 months!!!!!

When I saw the listing for a BMC motorcycle I had to take a look.
Bingo, a '66 R60 that belonged to Grandpa needed a new home. Even though I was
850 miles away there is no way I could leave this alone. It's 10:30P and there
was a phone number to call. I resisted the urge to call and emailed instead. You
never know.
Next morning I check my email as usual before heading to the salt mines and the
owner had just emailed @ 7:15 am. Well, if he's emailing that early I'm calling!
He was surprised that this old bike had gotten such interest but since I was
the first to contact him I was first in line!
How many miles?
"It says 500 so it must be over 100K"
What are the chances that Grandpa rode 100K? I ask him to check a couple of
things for me when you get home from work and let me know.
He calls back that night to tell me that the trip meter said 500 and the
odometer shows 5900! Oh, and if you want to save yourself the trip there are
people lining up locally offering $500 more.
I'll take it. Road Trip! Here's some pics. I gave it a bath and it cleaned up
pretty good. I have a bet with my neighbor that it's going to fire up once I go through everything. Enjoy.
nice, congrats!

since you're in LA, you should call Rick Monahan at Black Kat Motorwerks in Inglewood if you need any assistance. he's a great guy. he's also next door to the garage company, which is a sight to behold if you've never been through there.

Dan: a little trick I learned for the floats and seats: use a dab of valve-lapping compound and gently rotate the needle in its' seat. Gently. (unlike the bear sticking it in the ear of that salmon....)

I thought the Bear was supposed to eat the Salmon! Not the other way round.
Let's ask gertiektn, he lives in Grizzly country.
He also suggested the compound trick.

Please inspect all fluids seperately as you change them for telltale bits. Dump in a fresh paint liner and inspect it sunlight for "brassy sheen".
Check the filter in the petcock for rusty crud. Oh wait, there's no tank, my bad...
Get a compression test on it first thing if you can.
What is the serial number on the steering head and on the motor?
Ask any questions you want here.
There's a lot of folks here that want to see you succeed!
Thanks for the tips. It's my second slash 2 but I only had the R69S for a couple of months before someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse. That was on a Friday and the next morning I went to pick up the new ride.
I have the gas tank minus the petcock. I need a seat and pipes to have a complete bike so if anyone out there is tripping over something like that let me know. I'm going to pull the jugs to have a look in there before starting it up. I should probably go through everything that moves since it sat for since 1976! I took a look at the commutator on the generator and there is no wear at all which tells me that 5900 miles is an accurate total. I'll post pics as the project gets underway but I have to get this "Beemer Bobber" off the rack first!

Dan,
how is Millbrook doing these days? I taught at the Dutchess Day School for three years from 89-92 and really enjoyed it.

Nice shot.

Front brake

Nice and fresh. Works smoother than the old one.

Man, I have dyslexia! I thought the title was "fork brace," and I was doing one of these trying to figure out what a brake cable had to do with it.

Thanks for the tips. It's my second slash 2 but I only had the R69S for a couple of months before someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

I've made this offer to other /2 owners before...
I'll be happy, to put you out of your misery right now....just leave the key to the garage under the flowerpot...and email me your current address...
That ol' black piece of junk, will be out of your life forever!
