Check these too:

Not that there aren't countless inspiring long distance ride reports on ADV. Got a couple in the planning stages, but they're virtually all pavement.

Wb57, you inspired me to go check out a Versys the other day. I have to say, it really is a nice bike with a comfortable riding position. I really liked it. There was just one issue though, kicking my leg over that back seat to get on. I broke my hip about five years ago and I have a lot of trouble getting on tall bikes. The Versys isn't tall, but with that back section it might as well be a KLR. Next stop is to try a DL650. The wife's Ural has spoiled me, and now I'm actually considering a modern bike for myself.

Wait, what?

Yep! Things like electric starting and rear suspension were foreign to me until last year when I did a CB750. Now riding something with a windshield has me completely going soft.

One nice thing about the DL650 is the center stand, w/ the bike up on the center stand, you can hop on the left-side peg and swing your leg over w/o as much stretching. If that'd help your hip. Don't know of a stand is avail for the Versys.

About 75% of the time, I just stand on the left peg first to get on the bike. Unless I've got a suitable side hill, curb or what not. It actually feels a small bit taller than the KLR.

Oh, and you're certainly welcome to take mine for a ride.

As of now, there is no center stand available for the Versys. There was someone making them in '08 and '09, but they've stopped for some reason. I use that method with the side stand a fair amount of the time.

Thank you for the offer. Yours was the first I ever saw, and it definitely intrigued me. It seems very comfortable once I'm on it, it is just getting to that point. We'll see how I like the DL650. If I have the same issue with it, then I might have to give you a call next time I'm up your way. If I like it I'll have to go about selling my precious CB750.

Just rock a CBR954rr, enough throttle and you can get through anything.
(actually I'm seriously thinking of taking the fairings off again, as I hate how often I find myself somewhere I shouldn't be, and nervous about scraping.)
