Yeah once below the high 30s I am glad to use my hippo hands knock off, polar hands, handle bar gauntlets. They won't get your hands warm just keep them from losing so much heat. Now add the grip warmers and it feels much better. Get some, you will appreciate them.

You can grab the tag in the morning and move it towards Carthage.

We got a decent coating of ice down here in SP, enough that I won't be leaving the house until the morning. The streets are mostly good to go, but there are some icy sections.

Got up this morning to grab the TriTOR tag before heading down to Boone for my son's birthday.

This was the view from the deck:

Made it about 5 miles before I gave up due to 23 degree temps. What the hell. Oh well..

Took off around 10 or so heading to Boone as I just wanted to get there, take him to lunch and get back before dark in case the weather turned bad. On the other side of Durham, started to see a little snow and sleet, nothing serious. The speeds were staying about 10+. Hit Winston-Salem and it looked like the clouds were starting to break up a little. About halfway between Winston and Wilkesboro, it started freezing rain, but the roads were still good, so I figured I was still in good shape.

Saw a bunch of folks slowing ahead and noticed a SHITLOAD of lumber on both sides of the road. Very little actually in the roadway, but a full tractor trailer load. Apparently, someone didn't stay for the whole class on strapping down a load of lumber... Got pics on the way back.

The truck - which didn't wreck, just pulled over:

Lumber pic #2:

I mention "on the way back" as I got a few miles past this and the roads went from fine to about 25% traction in the span of about 5 miles. And I was only up to around 1100 feet. Boone is at ~3300 feet. Pulled over for a few and this is what it looked like:

It went to this from basically wet roads in a couple of minutes. Decided I tempted fate by calling the weather monkey's bluff on this one and bailed out. Time to get to this point - about 2:15. Travel time back to Raleigh FROM this point - 5:30.

Saw a LOT of this stuff on the way back:

I will text Meanstrk in the am to see if he is going to be able. I think he said the wife's back was hurting pretty bad again. He said earlier he might be able to make the 5 minute trip

ADV lunch

Ms. Spaceman and I were looking forward to the lunch. Unfortunately, I've got obligations at work I can't get out of. Will definitely attend next time.
