In Search of Wendell's Hole

In Search of Wendell’s Hole

The ride today was called Rio Puerco West of Rio Rancho but the main attraction was a picture Wendell had posted of an interesting hole he had found in the area. Buggs organized the ride. Our first meeting place was at McDonalds in Rio Rancho. We had quite a few more riders than expected. The newest bike was a KLR650, its 3rd day out of the dealership. This ride would be a good test.

The traffic was heavy near McDonalds as we headed for friendlier riding areas with better scenery.

We stopped at a second meeting place and gained three more riders.

The 125 was the smallest bike in the group.

Most of the group rode the easy roads to this spot. We waited for the more advanced riders to arrive by single track.

These 3 bikes would not be with us long. They had more adventurous riding planned.

The scenery started getting more interesting at this area.

This trail lead to Wendell’s Hole. The back side of the hill had very soft sand with a steep grade. We decided not to go this way because the heavier bikes would be a problem.

We rode to a large stock tank and stopped for a look.

We rode a couple miles to another stock tank.

Back at the parking lot we waited for some of the riders that came back a different way.

The new KLR survived the ride with only one broken piece of plastic from a nap in the soft sand.

The little 125 proved itself to be a great bike for this ride.

Here is the picture Wendell had taken on a previous visit to what we now call Wendell’s Hole. This was a great ride with good weather and a nice bunch of riders. Our total distance from McDonalds and back to the parking lot was around 70 miles. Thanks to Buggs for getting this ride organized and everyone else for the great company.

Thanks Joey for a good report, you captured the moments with your pictures, you do great!!!!!

This will go down as another great ride for the books! I had a blast, hope everyone there did too.

I am also happy that my friend Brian went with brand new KLR, but it got baptized. It was a full day for the new bike and Brian! I feel bad since I told him it would be an easy ride, not! We got in some nawrly areas searching for "Wendell's Hole."

I don't feel complete and never will unitl we finally find Wendell's Hole!
I guess another ride is in order, eh?

Alex, I'm ready anytime you are. We could use a little moisture in the sand to make it a little easier to ride on.

another hole

I have been to another hole near Beaver Head Station.
From your photo it looks near the same size at the opening.
It was about 20-30ft deep.
I know if someone fell inside it, there had better be a strong rope latter to get out.
It was near the power line towers crossing that area.

NM has many neat mysteries that a good MC is all you need to get to em.

Good RR Joey

Great Ride

Had a good time searching for Ditch's famous landmark. Maybe we should do a geo-cache there since it so hard to find.

Thanks all for the ride.
