SHEP'S BAR B QUE in Palestine

Hwy 79 ...north side of town...just inside the loop.

YOU NEED TO GO THERE.....IT"S GOOD....& YOU WON"T LEAVE HUNGRY

I had the daily special...2 meat plate w 2 sides & tea.....$8.70
The brisket had a good flavor to it....(& the slightly sweet sauce was just the ticket!!)
Sausage was the pinkish pork type...juicy & flavorful (they had hot links too,but I didn't get em)
Didn't have any ribs either....but they looked good....(& I saw a bunch goin out on other folks plates!)
No tater salad this time....sliced fried potatoes w/onions & some tasty pinto beans.

& I couldn't pass up a homade pecan fried pie...which I snacked on later.

Another LOUIE MUELLER visit

Hey Ya'll ....RZ500rich & I wound our way down to Louie Mueller BBQ in Taylor today. First time I've been there in at least 4 years! IT WAS GOOD!! & the line proved it!!
We had 3/4 lb of brisket (off the moist end)...2 links of sausage (1 reg 1 jalepeno)....a couple of pork ribs (mmmmm)...& a lg cup o beans n tater salad...
all that & a drink (I had water) was $23 split between the 2 of us...On par with Loco... Schoepf's ..Miller's....DEFINATELY less than Cooper's ...or that new Coach's in McGregor ($31 for similar ...that ain't too hot..if ya ask me)

I thought everything was pretty tasty....but the sauce (juice!?) although it tastes good...I like mine just a bit thicker...but not too heavy like Uncle Dan's in Waco.

Ride Texas magazine just did a BBQ edition and rated Louie Muellers first followed by Black's in Lockhart, City Market in Luling, Clark's Outpost in Tioga, Kruez Market in Lockhart, Pat Gee's near Tyler, Pecan Lodge at Dallas' Farmer's Market.

No "Tony The Tiger" from me....WOODY'S in Dublin

Woody's outside of Dublin on 377 is a good eatin place.....Just not a STANDOUT

The standard 1/2lb burger was decent (I put some of their tasty BBQ sauce on it)
Phil said the CFS was just ok
...& I tried a piece of RZs brisket...It was good..but not GRRRRREEAAT
Onion ring basket decent size & tasty but rings weren't real crispy.
Tater salad was supposedly NOT home made.
Don't kno bout the beans

It's a place to stop if yer hungry.....Beats McDs anyday...!

Another day......Another opinion

I hastily turned around and decided I needed lunch Mills County had my top ranked brisket previously so I was curious what I would find. It has been reopened under new owners as Circle V BBQ. Decor has not changed, basic BBQ ShedWalking in the place was clean and food looked good. Had no camera...sorry. So here it goes.....

BRISKET: Meat was damn near perfect, tender, perfect smoke, moist, and well seasoned. Might just be the best piece of brisket I have ever ate.......................................... .........................9.5
RIBS: Ribs were great too! nice smoke, tender, juicy, season right!....................8.5
SAUSAGE: Sausage was good but anticlimatic following the other two meats.....6.5

Sides were OK, Beans were well seasoned but needed a bit more cooktime(a bit hard). BBQ sauce was nothing special, a bit sour for my taste, but honestly the ribs and brisket needed none! I am gonna hit this place a few more times to see how consistant they remain. But as of this test, They rank in top 5 places I have eat Q

OK...HERE"S WHAT WE GOT TODAY
Store bought tater salad & slaw.......NO BEANS TODAY....empty pot
Ribs tasted ok but were kinda tough (notice I said ok)
My brisket sandwich was prob the best thing ...BUT....I had to ask to get it.
ADVERTISED SPEC: JUMBO BBQ SAND $5.50 w/chips ....ok...sounds good
they start makin it with CHOPPED!!....WHOA STOP!!......Not Sliced????
(server to the cook/mgr?...oh can we make it with sliced...ok ) THANX FOR THAT FOLKS!! .. but a $5.50 sandwich shouldn't be chopped...& it wasn't THAT big. NICE SIZE is what I'd say.
RZ & Halo's plates were avg size & they said the tater salad & cole slaw sucked.
The sausage was so so.....(they let me buy half a link to try) BUT they did GIVE me a rib to try.....
& I DID TIP EM FOR THAT..

Is this their people's choice thing? They've had some real misses with that in the past, like ranking the Horney Toads burger as the best. I've eaten there and it was a fine burger, but not in the same league as the LC or about a dozen other places I can think of. I think their reader base is biased by the bar trade there and not so much the food. However, I do see some logic in their rankings on the BBQ. I have not yet eaten at all of these places, but the ones I have I considered in the top tier of BBQ.

Speaking of ribs, how are yours doing?

Ribs

My ribs are better day by day, I'm sure you know what I mean. It takes a lot of time to feel normal again. At least I'm finally finishing up my DRZ build. I'm excited about taking a spin on it soon-it looks like a brand new bike down to the rubber. I hope I feel good enough to join ya'll next weekend at Ghost's, but can't commit yet.

I'm not really sure we ever fully heal, so much as get used to the new 'normal.' but yeah, it will take some time before sneezes no longer hurt. It's good you're staying busy and using the time to work on the bike.

Franklin's BBQ in Austin Revisited---Still #1

I had to go to Lone Star BMW so I decided to stop over to Franklin's to revisit their Que. For those who do not know, They took number 1 on Texas Monthly's list last year. Well, I really hate that cause the lines were bad enough. We got there at 10:15(open at 11) and found this

3 hours in line!!!! That was the only down part of the deal but I had interesting conversations with folks that had come from Florida and New Jersey to check this place out. Damn..their reputation has spread And finally...Nirvana

BRISKET:OMG...There is a reason they are number 1! 9.9
RIBS:OMG AGAIN!!! I don't believe in 10s but damn this is about as close as one can get and they are the gold standard of ribs...moist, tender, meaty and well seasoned. What more can I say....9.999
Sausage: Damn good also. great seasoning and just right smoke....9.0

I was not on duty so I drank some of their Live oak Effenwiesen and very well hit the spot Not sure how to bet the line, but if you can wait, it is worth it

Ok, apparently you gotta do this like Snow's. Ride to Austin the night before. Party all night until 9:00 am, and then go to stand in line at Franklin's. Too bad I'm too old to party all night. Can still get up and get in line. I'll bring a chair with me.

3 hours in line? Looks like I'll never get to eat there.

What day of the week was that?
