$200 for oil can't be right ??

Just got BMW synthetic oil, crush washers, and filters from my local BMW dealer for our two R1200GS bikes and the bill came to $ 202.25 !!
Looks like I'll be searching this thread for cheaper alternatives.

Sounds about right for full synthetic. Motorex full syn is close to 70 bucks for a gallon.

Switch to AMS oil and buy buy the gallon...That'll save you some cash. And stay away from the dealer.

I use Castrol 20W-50 dino motorcycle oil from O'Riley's. About $4 a quart. No problems ever. I use the same oil in my airhead and '06 GS.

Well, let's see..........

I buy a 5 quart container of oil from Wally World.......something like $15?
20W-50 Castrol GTX.

I buy a Purolator filter from Advance Auto, I think about $6?

I never change the crush washer. Uh, it never leaks. The one on my Miata has been there for 150,000 miles. But if you must............

This routine every 6K miles or so........

+1

Fancy oil is overrated. I am at 200,000 on my GS using the cheap stuff. No oil related engine problems ever.

Save the $$ for something necessary like a new final drive bearing.

But if you must buy the name brand stuff, it's your call.....

I've used Castrol dino on all my bikes for decades, including BMWs or other bikes with wet clutches. I also use a NAPA Gold 1348 oil filter made by Wix in both of our 1150GSs for about $4 each. If the expensive stuff makes you feel better, use it, but this stuff is well within specs and you can get it anywhere. The important deal is to change oil and filters within the factory recommendations. For the cost of using that BMW synthetic once on your two bikes, you can do more than 5 oil and filter changes on them with the Castrol dino. I still have yet to hear of anyone who has ever, ever had an oil related problem when they used an oil with the recommended specifications and maintained the proper oil level. BMW is very proud of their stuff, but I would rather spend money on other stuff. While the cheapest part of a BMW is the rider, there is no need to spend that much because you will get no benefit.

I've been paying $10.95 for the 5 qt jug of Castrol GTX for years from Wally when it's on sale. I use the BMW filters that I bought a bunch of back in 2005 for just over $10 each. air filter $15.

Same here +1.........20w50 Castrol GTX with a HiFloFiltro oil filter every 6000 miles = $20.00 per oil change.

I use Castrol Activo motorcycle oil and usually wait until it's on sale at Cycle Gear for $3.99 a quart. I pay about $13-14 for a BMW or K&N oil filter and use the crush washer 3 or 4 times.

Bluhduh

I like to see some people pay the everyday exorbitant BMW parts/shop prices. It keeps them in business for when I might really need the shop....

Agreed with what most others have said. Dino will get you there for a lot cheaper. If you change oil per schedule, there is little reason to shell out for synthetic. There is no reason to shell out for BMW engine oil.

That said, I have been putting synthetic into my HP2, as it spends a lot more time at high revs and slipping the clutch than my previous boxer did. I bought the oil from Beemer Boneyard at $50 for 5 L:

http://www.beemerboneyard.com/lqm10w505l.html

With shipping it's more like $55-60/L, depending on how much you get. If you buy oil filters & crush washers at the same time, there should be an additional discount. (No affiliation, just a happy customer.)

Just picked up same as you but for 1 bike - 4 qts BMW full synth, GSA filter, crush washer... bill = $77.21 incl tx. oil = $12.83 / qt., filter = $20.95.

Prices are a bit over the top, and as many others point out, there are good alternatives, but just thought you'd appreciate a direct comparison of price.
