I just bought a 2006 KTM 990 Adventure with 28.000 km and first thing I did when I got her home was a basic check on the fluids, brakes, suspension setting and so on.
I found the hydraulic clutch oil to be very low and nasty, so I proceed with a refill and bleeding process. It was my first one since I'm used to good ol' cable clutch motorcycles.

Since I did not have a syringe at hand I poured ATF Dexron IID pink fluid into the master cylinder and pumped it down to the bleeding bolt on the slave cylinder, until it came out bright pink and bubble free.

Hello JJ,

The slave cylinder of the clutches start to leak at an early age, the fact that the reservoir is empty might indicate you are loosing clutch fluid already. If the slave cylinder is still origina you might consider a decent replacement. This clutch system does not respond well to synthetic fluids, the fluids must be mineral, not sure if the dextron atf is mineral, if not I would get some mineral fluid (or even the original but expensive Maguar Blood) and redo the exercise.
Have fun!!! Although that is almost a given on the big KTM :-)

That's right. As you are in Spain, I expect you'll be able to find the bright green LHM+ (Liquid Hydraulic Mineral) fluid for Citroen car suspension (normally you can get it at the supermarket or fuel stations). It's ideal.

Note what's written on the bellows in your master cylinder:

ATF is not mineral oil compatible. It has additives to make seals swell. You'll also notice that ATF will cause your latex gloves to swell and fall apart.

Interesting. I've been running synthetic ATF per cjracers recommendation for about 3k miles with no issues.

Bar Snake

Installed a bar snake on my 300 EXC. Lots of dish soap. It was a little tricky with having hand-guards, but it worked out OK. Probably test it out in a day or so. 100% chance of rain tomorrow.

Had one clown that decided he wasnt going to allow me to split in 10MPH traffic. Driver next to him saw what was going on and waved me through. I did adjust A Hole's Mirror for him as I went by. It was obviously out of whack.

Funny, but it seems to be pretty rare that I get the guys trying to squeeze. Maybe like once or twice a year and usually on 880 or 101. Just another reason to have metal handguards. Usually the thud of the mirror is a shocker for the driver. Begs the question -

If someone squeezes you and you collide with them, is it your fault? I can see some dorkwad filing a report for a broken mirror.

Me too.

It's brake fluid that must not be used on Magura systems that say mineral oil on the lid.

Got her home from the dealer and promptly ran her up this hill, I have a 530 EXC and need to see how she handled in the dirt. I know this is not what the thread is about, but its what I did to my KTM today!!

Treated it to a day out... at the DMV...

... And when I say, "day", I mean it (you know how that goes!)...

Weeks of red tape and sitting around on municipal chairs [when I already had a UK bike license] just to do five figures of 8 in a suburban parking lot.

I shit you not!

To be fair, it's gotta be the first time they've ever had a 'n00b' roll up on a 12-foot tall KATOOM! and I'm pretty sure the 'test' called for a few more maneuvers than were performed. But the examiner [who looked like she'd never even been on a bike, let alone ridden one] figured I either knew what I was doing, or was utterly insane.

Gotta love Louisiana!

Anyway... Fully legit now, so onwards and upwards!
