Pissed

Put Katie, 06 950 Orange, back together after weeks of working on her a bit at a time.

- water pump shaft done
- valve job
- changed front and rear sprockets and put on a new chain
- clutch master cylinder changed for an obereron
- topped off left fork- it had been leaking fluid and felt funny when I rode her a bit in March when I started all of this

Today I got her buttoned up and fired her up- she sounded good.

Then I noticed the oil leak from the bottom flat oil screen area, DAMN

Then I noticed the weeping fork oil, double damn.

Sucks to work on something and not get it right the first time. When I get time I will have to address both of those problems. Ordering a fork rebuild kit, and a gasket for the lower screen which is the only reason i think it should be leaking.

I returned to the Crush. I had an 04 950A for a number of years. Then in a moment of weakness I sold it and got a 640A (which I still have). I love the 640, but its not quite a versatile. Recently a friend offered to sell me his bone stock 14k miles 2006. One ride around the block, and I realized that I forgot how much fun these bikes are. So I'll keep my R1150GSA for long trips, I'll keep my 640A for the areas where the lighter bike excels, but the new 950A will be the true swiss army knife.

Bluhduh Lukamir - Testing day

Rode here. Decided it would be a good idea to explore up there. It wasn't. Part way up tested the crash bars. They worked. Checked for witnesses. There wasn't (just a few sheep). Next test was physical strength and lifting techniques. Surprised. Actually got it up (on the 3rd attempt). Rode home reminding myself not to ride like a pussy. Should have just gunned it.

Yeah, it was very minimally used over the last 8 years. The only issue at the moment is popping at low rpms. I'm hoping that just running some carb cleaner through a couple tanks will clean it up. It hadn't been run for over 6 months when I picked it up. I'm surprised the pain hasn't started to peel--something I've seen happen to a lot of 950s around here.

Final shakedown with the 13-year old for our return trip from Anchorage in September. I'm doing the Alcan 5000 (www.alcan5000.com), then he's flying in and riding home with me.

Yes, we're loaded to the teeth. The secret to success with kids on bikes, especially on a two week, ~3000 mile ride, is keeping it fun and comfortable. This is incompatible with packing light, especially given we're talking Alaska in September. We're gonna see wet and we're gonna see cold. Gotta pack accordingly.

35-40 mph gusts on the coast have the boy supporting the bike for the pic. He's happier than that, really!

Most of the trip (883 miles in three days, 450 on the first one...) was on pavement, but some of it was dirt, and some was very pretty....

Nice weekend!
