Always did like that bike. Just looking at it for a few minutes you can imagine an engineer 30 years ago trying to figure out what kind of changes to incorporate into the design. I'd sure hate to have to change a cylinder on that booger though.

The cylinder sleeves are cast into the crankcase, so you're right, it would be quite a job! The design has an interesting pedigree (the GL500 is basically a CX500 with a larger tank, some different plastics and a monoshock). Back in the day, the design was popular with bike couriers due to its reliability (knock on wood). Here's some information about the designer and the history as well.

The design was nicknamed "the plastic maggot" due to a funny looking headlight fairing on early models. It was also the butt of a pretty funny cartoon comparing the engine layout to a trash/sewage pump:

Came back home last year (originally moved to Wasilla in 1972) after 5 years in the south.
Me and my Buell, which now belongs to a fellow that works at JBER...

And my new to me KTM

Looking forward to a great riding season and hopefully getting to go ridin' with some of you!
