Around Oz on a Wee...
I'm planning a ride around Australia over 6 weeks sometime in Summer '11/'12, with visits with friends and relatives in Gin Gin, Mackay, Perth, Esperance and Melbourne.
At this stage a v-strom 650 seems to be the best option within my price limit, since I want something fairly new, and there's no way I'm doing it on my baby ninja. I've read a few ride reports, but they all ridden on beamers and katooms, so my questions is: Has anyone done it on a wee, and what thoughts do you have on it? Also, any suggestions on things I should/shouldn't take, and places I should see would be awesome. Thanks |

I don't think summer is the best time of year for a number of reasons.
Lots of people on holidays so accommodation may be scarce in any decent holiday location. Wet season up north and really hot down south. If that's when you can go then good luck with the weather and enjoy. |

Hey, thanks for the reply. Mine's a long one; feel free to skim over lots.
Accommodation shouldn't really be too much of a problem, as I'm planning on camping. Not as comfy, but a hell of a lot cheaper, and I don't mind it too much. Adds to the experience. You could be onto something with the weather; it may be a PITA. Lived in Mackay for 5 years before moving back to Brissy again, and the summer weather wasn't too bad, just so long as those pesky cyclones stay away and you don't mind temperatures in the high 30s. Nth Qld's only a small portion of the trip though, and I've hardly been out of state. New experiences are exciting. Yeah, it's the only time I really get long enough to do the trip. 3 months holidays and nothing to do with it. It'll be good to get out of the house for a while. Going to start looking at bikes come mid-year break. Give myself a chance to get used to a new bike with new weight, power and handling characteristics, and do some shorter trips before I try the whole lap. Plus there's all the farkling to be done Lots of planning, but plenty of time. For now, it's head in the books until exams are over. Rhys. |
