Catskills Weekend

ever have one of those days?

but... I digress

A great weather forecast and a free weekend inspired Michelle to call for a road trip! Riding? sure... I'm in. So, with a little planning we decided on meeting at Hancock NY, about halfway between us, and a tour of the Catskills.

Michelle ready to roll

me? I figured it's a nice day, and early enough, I'll roll south thru Newport and south county RI... big mistake, heaps of traffic and police. No pics, and a long grind west.

Michelle, on the other hand, made good time, and was smart enough to grab a six pack on her way to the hotel!

waiting for me when I arrived

284 miles out for me, 230 odd out for Michelle.

so I had a nice loop programmed into the GPS, about 250 miles around the Catskills, and with a beautiful day ahead of us, we were ready for some breakfast & some riding. We decided to head into Hancock, have breakfast, and then be on our way... but the road was closed. So, rather than sit & wait while the bugs swarmed we headed south on 97 to Calicoon. Nice road, nice breakfast, then reversed and headed back on our loop.

We headed east out of Hancock on 17, then turned north on 30. great road along the river

stopped to stretch out legs near Margaretville.

fun to ride with your best friend

we continued on north, thinking an ice cream might be nice...however it seems the ice cream season isn't here yet, and there wasn't any place open. we stopped at a little German restaurant Haus Waldeck, and had a smoothie and a bit of cake.

the cake was amazing!

across a reservoir
beautiful day!

back on the road, we found a few "roads less traveled"

me? lost? well.... not exactly....

I mentioned the bugs right?

so... after our little dirt road adventure (only 0.7 miles of loose gravel with an uphill switchback), we decided to call it a day.

we hopped on the 17 back west into Hancock and went in search of food

ended up at the Bluestone Grill in Hancock. Had a great dinner and some laughs with the bartender, and then headed back to the hotel.

We were sitting and chillin' when we heard a big BOOM! I figured (living in New England) someone had fired a cannon and struck the colors at sunset... (they do that here)...but after a bit we saw the lights of the fire brigade. Hmm... entertainment

big times for the locals

the hill across from the hotel on fire

turns out... the property owner was trying to burn a gypsy moth infestation... after sunset... and it got out of hand... alcohol involved?

here, hold my beer & watch this

anyway, no one hurt, and free entertainment

so Sunday came a little quicker than I would have liked... but we still had some time to ride together

so Michelle got her temporary GPS mount sorted...

wire ties are a wonderful thing

and after a McD's breakfast, we were off!

Michelle off and running

no cops.... good

loads of bugs still though...

we took 268 north out of Hancock to route 10. Both very nice
then onto 28 north towards Oneonta.

we sat downtown & had an iced coffee... looked at the map, and planned our routes.

shame the weekend ended so soon

anyway... time to hit the trail. Michelle headed west, and I headed east, which is where I ran into my buddy...

must have been "be nice to old folks day" as he let me go without even a warning (after he ran my license & plate). "Sir, 74 in a 55 zone is a bit... ah... excessive" nice guy though, and no, it didn't really slow me down

I had a brilliant ride along 23 (where I met the local sheriff) and then onto south Gilboa road. This ran into 990v (also brilliant) to 145 and then back to 23.

took the backroads through CT on the way home, bug population dimished and made it home about 6 o'clock

cracked a beer, washed the bike
Crystal Glo kicks ass!

921.9 miles for the weekend!

good times

well, if you do the western NY trip in June we'll be hitting the reverse of my trip home. Hopefully sans the scrutiny of the local sheriff.
