Best 40" flat screen

Time for a new tube! 40" flat, best picture, $700 - $1000, what's out there? I've always had Sony but not in stone.

FYI Samsung LCD panels and Sony LCD panels come from the same LCD plant, a joint venture called S-LCD.
I used to go visit there every year or two, back in the olden days of being employed.

It isn't the panel that makes a picture great (to a point) , it is 90% in the process of the signal.

Samsung has LCD technology that is out in front of Sony. But hey, if someone likes a given name and logo on the exterior plastic housing because it makes them feel all warm and fuzzy, then buy the Whirlpool instead of the Kenmore. They both wash clothes or dishes. Oh wait... buy the Samsung or the Sony, whichever you THINK is "best." Odds are that someone with an untrained eye will be equally happy with either one. That's all.

With their Trinitron® technology, Sony OWNED the high-end CRT market (but not the HIGHEST end, smallest volume, of broadcast reference monitors). LCDs came out. Sony ignored them like they were some sort of fad. Sony lost market share. Sony teevee and monitor sales dried up. So far behind on R&D, the ONLY way Sony could stay in the display game was to go ask Samsung, "If we give you a BILLION DOLLARS, can we have half the output of your bleeding-edge LCD plant." As it happens, Samsung was strapped for cash at the time. Samsung said, "Ok." And THAT, dear friends, is how Sony stayed in the display market instead of becoming a footnote.

Oh, and no shit on the BILLION (US) dollars figure. The plant cost twice that. Standing on the foreskin of technology is EXPENSIVE.

Um dood, where did that Sony thing come from? I suggested a Samsung or LG as they get the best of write-ups in the consumer market. I prefer , even for home use, panasonic Broadcast or commercial grade plasmas because no matter how good a LCD is, it isn't as good as a PDP plasma. But the question was abou t a size and price point. he can't get a 40 or a 1000.00 display in a PDP 1080P unit for that price point so I suggested the bext best thing, a LG or Samsung. I never mentioned a Sony.

I had a top-of-the-line Sony flat screen CRT that fried it's motherboard twice in 3 years. When I replaced it with an LCD flat panel I was hell-bent against buying a Sony product. Reading all the reviews I decided Samsung was the way of the future, until I saw it in person. The glossy screen of the Samsung was a deal-killer for me. That and the clear plastic frame swayed me once again to Sony. I will second the above comment that the key to picture quality is in the processing and the Sony XBR system is very good. I also agree that 40" is too small unless it's going in your motorhome. I would suggest that the minimum size to consider is 46".
