My opinion is that they don't hold enough, are very particular to viscosity, clog easily, make a lot of noise, require detailed cleaning with each use, and fail in the middle of big jobs when you're pressed for time.
When I need something to really get some painting or staining done that I can't do with a brush/roller in an afternoon, I rent a professional unit, get it done fast and easy, then take it back. Or better yet, pay a painter to do it and have it done when I get back from riding

^ What he said, all of what he said about hobbyist units.
One can make mistakes MUCH faster with the pro versions. .

At one time, Wagner made a professional style airless sprayer for the DIY set. They worked MUCH better than the noisy spitter guns. I don't know if they still make them, but I bet a used one could be had if they don't. I paid $139 for it and bought another a few months later on sale for $119. I used one often in my sign painting business. They were the real deal, just not nearly as expensive as a Graco or Titan.

under $100 ??? and you expect it to work well, or even OK? ain't gonna happen.
motornoggin is right, though, if you can find one of the older wagners used, i'm sure you could pick it up for 100 or less. the catch is, they won't spray the heavy exterior latex or acrylics without thinning the paint a lot, then you'll be worrying about runs everywhere. works excellent for lighter stuff like lacquers. if it's really a once in awhile usage thing, i'd just rent one too. |

Maybe you can ping the guy bitching about his car getting scratched? Split the cost and all.

Try one of these. I bought one several years ago and painted my barns with it. Moves a lot of acrylic latex from a 5 gallon can. That 35' hose does take a lot of cleaning though.

I bought a Graco professional unit when a buddy and I were painting 2 barns. Works great. Does take a shitload of cleaning, so not something you can just whip out for a 10 minute job. Pretty much sprayed everything we put through it without complaints.
I would agree on renting one. And not buying a 100 junker |

If you already have a compressor for the shop I'd suggest an air sprayer.
Otherwise +1 on the rental. The inexpensive electric sprayers are barely worth spraying fences with.

Get a piston pump type and NOT a diaphragm type. (And forget about the handheld types all together) The decent entry level units are not that spendy and will spray thicker stuff, and the overspray is not that bad. They also work will with a roller.
I have a unit from Home Depot that is made by Graco and it is serviceable and parts are cheap, even to rebuild. .02=mine.
