My trip to the North Cape, Norway.

On the 4th of July i started a trip to the North Cape in Norway, i know it has been covered several times before but this is my small trip.
I don't have a huge story to tell you, i just wanted to show some of the scenery you pass when going to Nordkapp.

I live in Sweden, close to the Norwegian border so my plan was to go north in Norway and south in Sweden. My route would be the easy one, E6 in Norway and E45 in Sweden.
Here's a link to the planned route.

Ok, let's get rid of the boring stuff first, if you are traveling in Norway make sure to stay within the speed limit, or if you are speeding.. don't get caught doing it.
It is extremely expensive.

Day one (Sunday at around mid-day, empty road), i hear a strange noise and see a blue, blinking light in my only rear view mirror.

Ten minutes later i'm on the way again with a 6500 NOK speeding ticket in my pocket (6500 NOK is about 1040 USD and if you don't pay you get 15 days behind bars).
The rest of the day is not much to write about, the weather turned out ok and after 592km i stopped just north of Trondheim (Google Map).

Day two started out really good, warm and sunny weather.

Later in the afternoon i passed the gates to Northern Norway (Google Map).

An hour later the rain was poring down and i rented a "hytte" (cabin) for the night to dry up my gloves and boots.
I stopped at 482km this day, just outside Mo i Rana (Google Map).

More is coming soon..

Day three started with a short visit to the Arctic Circle Raceway (Google Map).
To be honest, it wasn't that much to see.

One hour later i was passing the Arctic Circle (Google Map).

Starting to enjoy the views.
(Google Map).

(Google Map)

In Bognes the road takes a jump over the water, so you are forced to a ferry (Google Map).

The weather was gray and boring.

But later in the afternoon the clouds cleared and it turned out to be an awesome evening with great roads.

I stopped in Nordkjosbotn (Google Map), after about 582km this day.

Day four started out nice, photo taken in Skibotn (Google Map).

A few hours later i pass one of the most spectacular views on the trip, the photos don't really make this justice, it needs to be experienced IRL (Google Map).

South of Alta i ran in to some really bad weather (Google Map).

I just kept going, it was just awful. My next stop wasn't until i arrived at Olderfjord about 140km south of the North Cape (Google Map).
My gloves and boots where soaked so a rented a room at a hostel.
Day four stopped at 455km.

More is coming soon...

I fell asleep early on day four, at 00:30 day five i woke up to a clear blue sky.
Photo taken out of the window at the hostel 33 minutes after midnight...

The sun was shining and it was impossible to go back to sleep.
At 05:30 i had to leave, i just couldn't miss this opportunity.

Just a few kilometers north the fog where thick and the sun was nowhere to be seen (Google Map).
It was a really strange experience, this early in the morning it was dead silent, no cars on the road, no wind whatsoever.
It was just me and a few birds awake.

About 20 minutes later a could see the end of the fog (Google Map).

(Google Map)

Out of the fog i had a beautiful morning (Google Map).

There where still some low clouds left behind.
This is the exit of the tunnel that goes below the sea, to the Magerøya island (Google Map).

View over Honningsvåg, 07:41 in the morning.

The road from Honningsvåg to North Cape is awesome, if you ever get the chance to go here, do it! Just make sure to order a clear blue sky..

I arrived at North Cape 08:30 in the morning.

It was me and a multitude of RVs.

Going back from North Cape (Google Map).

Day five ended in Kautokeino (Google Map), 510km this day.

More to come soon..

Day six, seven and eight will be compressed into one post.

Traveling through the north of Sweden is, sadly, not the most fun you can have.
First of all the mosquitoes are terrible, and there is a lot of them. You can't stand still in one place without being attacked by hundreds of them.
Second, the road i choose to use in Sweden (E45) is quite boring.

If i where to make this trip again in the future i would probably go both north and south in Norway.

Anyway, going from Kautokeino to Sweden you need to pass a small part of Finland (Google Map).

I entered Sweden in Karesuando (Google Map).
Day six ended in Arvidsjaur (Google Map), with 619km on the clock.

Day seven and eight where pretty uneventful.
The seventh day where only 369km long, i stopped due to heavy raining in Strömsund (Google Map).

The eighth and last day where 608km long and took me from Strömsund back home to Torsby (Google Map).
The last 150km where unfortunately very wet.

Thats it, in total i traveled about 4300km in eight days.
I probably couldn't have done the long days without my Airhawk, it's the first time i have used it and i like it alot.

If anyone wants to see more photos from the road to North Cape, i had my GoPro HD mounted on the bike the last 75km, taking a photo every 10 second.
Here is 381 on those photos, some of them are really good.

Thanks for reading this bike report :-)

My god bet that pissed you off a bit.

I would have been there right about now if it hadn't been for an operation to my shoulder.
Drove there for a skiing trip a few years ago, superb scenery.

Good report thanks.

Great report! I really enjoy seeing Nordkapp trips. I hope to do it in 2012.

About the ticket, how many kph over were you going and were there many police on the roads? Just curious if they were close to the villages or out on the open road.

Thanks again for the pictures.
