Play Hooky Ride Sept 10th

I have a ride planned for Sept 10th, a Friday to the Blue Ridge and WV. The route is shaping up (very fluid we can change it on the fly) to be: 64 to 295 to 64 to 81N to Harrisonburg to 33 to a ride up to Judy Gap (tallest Mountain in West VA) back down to 33W to Seneca Rocks, west out of Seneca Rocks to Elkins to 250 back to Monterey (then 250 back to 81 and 64 home or other routes can be taken)

For those that want to stay over 1 night and head back Saturday morning there is the Montvallee Hotel (we have stayed there before-it's under new owners now and operated by the Highland Inn ). They still have rooms available. Nice place reasonable on the wallet. Like the last time we will dine and participate in some libation over at the Highland Inn.
http://www.montvalleemotel.com/index.htm

Meet at Colonial Downs Pitstop on Route 155 in New Kent at 7AM and we will roll out at 730AM. Our first gas stop will be at Gumspring BP on 522, so if anyone wants to meet there we should be there around 830A

cheers,

j

We had 8 riders show up. One rode with us to Harrisonburg and then peeled off to visit family up there. MADSTROM, JHVA, mubikS, and 4 guys from the Williamsburg Riders. 5 stayed over at the Montvallee. Weather was great. We had lunch across from Seneca Rocks at Yoakums. I wished I could have done more miles but had a family emergency and had to head back early Saturday AM. Ended up with 560 miles for my 1.5 day ride.

Has anyone ever ridden with Mickey (MADSTROM)? Geezus , that guy is fast in the turns!!

So the ride was on and I met the herd at Gum Springs. 6 of us slabbed it to H'burg Sheetz where we met number 7 or was it 8 .

From there we headed out on a loop via Rte 33 out through Germany valley
I had to stop for a couple of shots.

Seneca Rocks, Elkins and back to Monterey via Rte 250.

2 of the guys made it a day trip and headed back to Richmond so we used that as an excuse to escort them back to the "Confereate Breastworks" on Rte 250. I took the opportunity to ride ahead and enjoy the prime road conditions on Rte 250 with NO TRAFFIC!!!! So I could snap a few shots as they arrived.

View looking west from the Breastworks

A local demonstrating proper corner carving technique.

The escort John & Bill

The day ride guys headed back for Williamsburg. Sorry, can't remember all the names:

Looking down on the way back to Monterey:

More cocktails and conversation at the Montvalle after dinner and Sam Adams at the Highland Inn.

The next morning John had an emergency call from the wife and headed home at 7:30 a.m. The loose plan was to ride Blue Grass Valley and then Rte 39 towards home. But after a great breakfast at Highs, which was packed, everybody but me got the itch to head back for home via slab and forego the days ride into WV and Rte 39.

I took a liesurely ride down the length of Bluegrass Valley to Rte 84. Once I got there the skies started looking ominus so I reluctantly headed back towards Monterey. Here's some shots of Bluegrass Valley.

Jimmy's (SRMN8R) favorite Bluegrass shots

More Bluegrass pictures.

Note overcast skies to the south.

Somewhere along here I lost my pre$$$$cription sunglasses. Spent an hour and a half back tracking 5 miles looking for them to no avail .

At Rte 84 (1:00 p.m.) the skies were looking like the forecast of 60% showers after 2:00 p.m were going to happen. So, I hightailed it back via Rtes 84E, 220N, 250E, 262S, I-64E, 814E by lake Sherando, BRP south, 56E, Roseland Road, 29N, Oak Ridge Rd, 56E, 60E, 13E with next to No Traffic and home by 4:30 p.m. All in all a great ride and met some nice guys even if I can't keep all the names straight !!!
I like this Friday hookie concept maybe we can do it again. Next time I'll take more pictures.

Great pictures! Sounds like you had a nice ride home.

Two guys that rode back were Mike from Lexington and Andy from Wake, VA (near Urbanna) aka mubikS aka 'Skibum' aka collector of Vintage Japanese Iron.

M-in-law in the hospital in NOVA and wife gone for 3-4 days-that was the emergency to get me home to care for the critters and the contractors working on our house this wkend, so she could leave etc.

Grab Fail

Tried to grab John's shot of the New Kent Chapel Methodist Church. I couldn't find a location in Google, so I pulled up google maps and found a twisty road conveniently named Old Church Rd. Figured it was worth a shot, eh? So I took 33W from Middlesex thru West Point and to New Kent Highway. Turned at the roundabout onto Old Church and started looking (ok, not really looking hard... the road was too fun!). This road keeps going and keeps going and its a bunch of great country sweepers... until I realize it's getting a bit dark and I am about to hit the fuel light on a road i've never been on. Hm. Sign says "Leaving New Kent, Entering Hanover" Uh-oh. Now it's really dark and i'm ticking off miles on the F-meter... when bingo! West Store Exxon on Rt360. So no grab, but a GREAT way to kill 3 hours. Glad to find this road!

Wicked nice try

nice try MUBIk, but you were a bit off track....damn, you were almost to my house.....
the tag ain't that far west, but I ain't giving clues.....
I'll be rolling in the a.m. for it, lets just say it's wayyyyy east of where you ended up. I will say it's a spirited 11 minuts from WestPoint. I'm betting NiceView bruces all of us.....

Wasn't me. Had a busy day dropped my 71 MGB off at the New Kent Winery at 630AM for the British car show and then got back home and made a run to Richmond to lead the Richmond BMW Riders Monthly Club Ride after the business meeting. No takers to ride...go figure. Then back to the car show.

Missed you, dean, and jim today. Paul led us on a serious around-the-ass-to-get-to-the-elbow ride. I rolled 2k miles on the new bike since July.

Yeah, that's the trouble with make-up rides. Jim had a neighborhood cook out and I 'm sure Dean had a class and I had the Richmond Ride and car show thing. Hope you had a good turn out for the ride.
