A few weeks ago I tried to come in from the south and there is a gate about 2mi north of Templin Hwy. Evidently it's been closed for some time. There is a low spot on one side of the gate (about 2 feet high) and it looks like you could get a lighter DS over it with two people. No way to get the Super Tenere over it. I have not tried coming down from the north yet but may explore next time in the area.

It's an expensive ride if you get caught.

Ridge Route Alternate

The last time I road it there is a gate about 7 miles in if you are entering off of the 138 and traveling South on Old Ridge Route Rd. The gate was installed because of the mud slides from a more than a few winters ago. But I have known a rider or two to get around the gates and been TOLD that its totally fine and ride-able....however, it could be an expensive ride.

Your better off riding about 5 miles on Old Ridge Route Rd. and make a hairpin left on "7N23"....(you can't make a right!) Then stay and ride on that to Lake Hughes Rd....Lake Hughes/Lake Elizabeth area and getting something to eat at the Rock Inn.

This sign is still there last I checked from the south side. Never thought of calling.

I have spoken to some riders too that said it's fine to ride behined the gate, but it looks like another poster here shows signage otherwise. Expensive indeed. Would be nice to get an update about it reopening.

OHV's & OFF ROAD DIRT BIKES February 26, 2007
The 1915 Ridge Route is technically a "paved road." OHV's (Off Highway Vehicles) and dirt bikes, in other words, (UN-LICENSED VEHICHLES) are not allowed on the Ridge Route or on the shoulder of the Ridge Route unless you trailer them in then un-load in an area that allows off road activity.

Ridge Route

I rode the Ridge Route from North to South about 10 months ago. It is no problem to get around the gate coming in from the north, I was on my KLR. When I got to the South gate as was previously noted there is a trail around it but not something I'd try on a KLR. I just turned around and went back out the north where I came. It is interesting, there are historical plaques placed along the road that give the history of the road. As far as the warning signs I didn't see them (wink, wink) but I did meet two other bikes while I was back there and didn't see any signs of authorities.
