+1

The tracking feature is fun and all, if only to let wives & GF's believe they still have the leash on you while you're out, but most GPS's can do a better job with other functionality to boot.

The unique benefit and only real reason for owning a Spot is having the 911 button at your reach when you need it. Nobody knows better than I that "when you need it," you'll most probably be well away from the mangled wreckage that used to be your bike.

To fulfill it's purpose, the Spot needs to be attached to you securely in a place you can reach even when folded up and wedged in a ditch, and powered by an equally secure standalone source that also stays with it at all times. Some of the external batteries mentioned on this and other threads may work, but they add unnecessary complexity and points of failure to the system.

It's a last-resort, oh-shit, mommy-come-save-me device. The built in batter compartment works fine. We don't complain about the inconvenience or cost of a decent helmet - Lithium batteries are no different. Unless you have one of the "2"s with SN between 0-8000000 and 0-8053925, then do what you have to do.

My $.02

When I use one, I use S-1. I've pretty much thrown my SPOT away and just carry a Sat Phone instead.

SPOT 2.

bought it a few weeks before Kings of the West.

was running tracking every ride. turn it off when you're done riding.

but as Pucker mentioned, no real need to use the tracking mode other than a nosey wife/gf.

Sat phones and ACR personal locator beacons are my future purchases. spendy, but will serve their purpose. cuz 911 is all you really need.

http://www.rei.com/category/40002203

forest roads, single track, desert riding all should be worn on your body in front where you can reach it and push the button.

This is on my things to evaluate and see if it is worthy. Spot would then be an Oh Shit back up.

ORLY?

Tracking mode is probably the best feature of the SPOT. Sure, people can invent a situation where the bike and rider are separated, the rider is in horrible shape yet could still hit the help button if the SPOT was in their pocket. But ultimately the tracking mode shows that you stopped moving.

That's when having a wife, girlfriend, and/or others is handy.

I find them handy in other ways.

I don't find it comforting that someone watching my Spot page may consider calling 911 if I spend too long stopped. I get it - I have a wife & kids - but at some point you have to do your best to be responsible and able to deal with tragedy while restraining the urge to strive for ultimate security. There are other less adventurous endeavors for men interested in that.

Unless it's vanity you're interested in - some people use and advertise their Spot pages for just that. Get over it & ride.
