Cut some down? Most places prohibit that kinda thing, and I hear the penalties for getting caught are pretty stiff. Just curious what everyone does. Can't really carry a bundle of wood on a ride ya know
You will need a fire permit and look on the US Forest service site to see where fire restrictions are at.

right now I think it is are level 3 and you can only have fires in fire ring (metal type) in established camp grounds.

Many remote areas have lots of wood just laying around for fires, no need to cut down and yes the penalties are high for both.

Grinch!!!

I'm fine with being in an established campground with a fire ring, in fact I prefer it that way just because it's less to worry about. Take for example Gorman. Gorman sucks, I know; but let's just say you were there and had no firewood. There isn't shit laying around up there, and since cutting branches down is a no-no; what do you do?

I have hauled a bundle of wood on both the Vstrom and the DR350. Use ROK straps.

Cutting or collecting wood, even from dead, downed trees requires a permit in the local forests and then you can only cut in certain areas. I usually skip the campfire when I'm solo and on a moto. Usually more trouble than what it's worth.

No need to bring sand to the beach IMO, especially in the springtime when there's plenty of fallen or cut wood to collect all around, if you're not camping in desert like areas that is. I carry a small axe while camping solo off the bike and as long as fires are permitted at the time and after getting a fire permit there's no reason not to have a campfire.

As for collecting wood for personal use at a campfire, at least in Sequoia NF and most other forests in the area there is no permit needed.

http://www.fs.usda.gov/main/sequoia/passes-permits

"Information for Firewood Cutting permits. Permits are needed when firewood will be cut and taken off the forest.
Wood collected for campfires while camping on the forest do not need a permit. Firewood can not be cut, collected, and transported off the forest without a permit.
"

+1 ROK straps or cargo nets.
I try not to camp in improved campgrounds so finding fallen/cut wood is easier.

Or if no wood near camp, just drag some back.
