I'll probably do the dress nice apologize and admit guilt and plead for a lesser fine and take the school. I guess my question is, unless I'm a total asshole, if I go to court and use the argument the gun isn't calibrated or they are not entirely accurate can the judge actually fine me more than above or is that the ceiling? First time dealing with this, thanks.
This is one approach, but you need to get schooled on it and use a more aggressive approach if you're gonna use it.

I got a case dismissed some 20 years ago for requesting a log of calibration of radar gun - which they don't have. Case dismissed. I watched a half dozen guilty verdicts before me and I was really nervous. Whole hearing took less than 5 minutes.

The problem with so-Cal is there are SO many people that they have heard EVERY story already, so the judges aren't too keen on another song and dance story. Sometimes you can get a reduced fine but I've never heard of them removing points, and it is a guilty verdict. AFAIK you have to post the entire bail before you can request a hearing - they refund it if you're 'not guilty'.

Anyway, my point is you have to decide if you're gonna fight it (calibration defense) or plea guilty and throw yourself on the mercy of the court. I don't know what the procedures are these days for the calibration defense, but I'm pretty sure they've closed that loophole pretty well.

The best scenario is if your traffic cop doesn't show up, but that's pretty rare these days too - they get paid overtime for going to court so they're happy to oblige. It's pretty tough to 'get off' these days and hence most will tell you to just pay the fines and do traffic school - no fuss, no muss, and no points. You can do this every 18 months.

Thanks guys, I'll do some research and make a decision how to handle in court, being respectful/humble has served me well thus far in life. In the end I did the crime so I'll pay the fine but I just think 300+ is insane.

I got a speeding ticket about 2 years ago in Kern County, going through a small town on 395, in the middle of the night. It was 3 hours drive. I went to court, hoping the cop would be there and I can talk to him and the judge. But it turns out I have to schedule an other court day to see the cop and fight back. :(
I said screw that, I cant drive all the way up here again. I asked the lady if there is any other way to fight the ticket. She said I can write a letter to the judge and "she" will decide. When I heard "she", I said "that's it, hold my beer, I got this"...
I wrote a long, nice and touchy letter about how I was driving with my GF and my baby daughter. How I was a responsible man and would never put their life into jeopardy by going fast, etc...
Guess what? They sent my money back (some $300+ dollars). I was sooo happy. So my point is, if you are nice, I think you always have a chance with people.

P.S: My letter was all in English too.

If you want to fight it, look into trial by declaration. Unless you want to waste your time in court. You'll have to appear once, to plead guilty/not guilty. If you plead not guilty you'll have to come back again to get the case heard. And I guarantee, the cop will show up.
Your best bet is trial by declaration. Did he get you by radar? Look into illegal speedtrap test and traffic survey.

I've gotten out of a majority of them by the cop NOT showing up

My daily driver attracted a lot of attention especially when it was primered
I would put a scratch mark on the door each time I was pulled over I think I was at 27 or 28 scratch marks, after I painted it I was only pulled over 3 times

Times have changed. Municipalities are hurting for money, fines have gone up, and they are making sure they collect on as many tickets as possible. As someone said above, cops are getting overtime to make court appearances.

Over the last 5 years I went to court over 3 tickets. First one I took traffic school when the cop showed up, 2nd one I beat (even though the cop showed again), third one was a bullshit ticket, but the cop showed and lied his ass off and I lost.
Since I had sit through a bunch of court, I saw a ton of other traffic cases called, and only once did the officer not show up.

Baja designs and Goki used to make conversions. Currently nobody makes one, only used ones show up once and a while.
