Hey y'all!

Thanks for the well wishes. Broke out of the hospital this afternoon (thank you to my ex wife and my kids for coming to fetch my broken ass ).

Pics forthcoming, but if you absolutely can't wait here's a link to my photobucket:

Sucks. Did you take the photos of the compound fractures while you were lying there? That's badass. You've got the crowd that takes photos of tipped over bikes beat.

So there I was

Yesterday was a gorgeous sunny day in Eastern Idaho; a perfect day to make a run to Idaho Falls to pick up some fork seals for the ST1100. Sadly, 'twas not to be...

About 10 miles this side of Idaho Falls the IDOT is doing a major road project: Looks like they're widening the road to 4 lanes starting just past the turn to Ririe. I came up to the construction along with a quarter mile of cars in front of me - now there's only one lane with a flagman and a pilot car. Seemed like a good idea to take advantage of the side roads going into town; there are some fun hills to the east of IF. The long line of cars going in the opposite direction had gone past so I started my u-turn - just in time to get nailed by a Chevy 3/4 ton pickup hauling a boat. I saw him a second or two before he saw me judging by the sound (or lack of) of his tires. Tried to get the hell out of his way, my u turn was almost complete, but his 35-40mph caught up to my 3mph ass before I could do so. Bang.

Fuck that hurts. Looking at the sky. Lift my head to look at what hurts and it is obvious that my right calf is broken. A quick self assessment showed me that nothing else had a problem except a charlie horse on my lower left thigh, not sure what that was about.

First responders got there FAST , like less than 3 minutes. Ambulance not 10 minutes after that. As they were cutting off my Aerostich I gave my cell phone to one of the EMT's with the request that she take as many pics as she wanted to. She obliged beautifully, and had the help of her EMT friends: they posed my leg.
*don't scroll down if you're squeamish*

that is not a knee in the pic above... Just sayin'.
Compound fracture, Tibia/Fibula for me, death for the ST. I really like the composition of this pic, other than the fact that it is my bike on it's side:

I'm glad she took these pics, cuz I wasn't really looking at much.

It really stings when they pull yer leg
Really.

Before long they had me all strapped and ready to load:

They got me to EIRMC and I had to wait in the staging area for a half hour or so but they gave me some decent drugs so it wasn't so bad. It gave me a chance to call Mom, Dad, Femme, and my Physical Therapist sister (thanks for starting this thread for me Christine! ).

Before too long they rolled me into the OR where they promised to put a pin in my Tibia. Of course I asked one of the attending nurses to take a few pics of the procedure I stayed awake for the operation but they wouldn't let me have a mirror to look behind the curtain.

Got your popcorn?
Here's what they did to fix this:

Warning: kinda graphic pics ahead.

first they cleaned up the mess:

Then they got out the power tools (I loves me some good power tools ) and started making holes:

DEEPER!!!

Right, that's enough. Clamp things up.

That's better.

What'd I learn? When you're stopped in traffic and the road is a gentle right hand sweeper you better be DAMN sure there's nobody coming before you try to pull a u turn. Officer McFriendly gave me an $85 citation "failure to yeild right of way" just before I went into surgery to remind me of that. I deserved it.

90 800mg Motrin, 30 Hydrocodone, and a bottle of antibiotics is in my possession. You'll be seeing a lot of me on here for the next 6-8 weeks...

Look - really look hard - before you turn...

So THAT'S what a compound fracture looks like....
They teach you "It's when the bone punctures through the skin", and leave the rest to imagination.

I'm sure many of us, once receiving the news, were anxiously awaiting your first post; glad it has you in seemingly good spirits and so soon after the accident. Thanks for posting the pics and the lessons learned.

And seriously, glad you're still with us, partner.

Sorry to learn about the leg but the pictures were awesome, nice work and happy to hear you are on the mend already.

I'd be more upset that you somehow have lost all the hair on your head. Did they rip it off with the tape or what?

Ow! Daaaamn! Sorry to see that man. Heal quickly.
Did you get a cool cast out of the deal at least?
And on a note of lesser importance, how did the bike fare? I see broken plastic bits and all...
