My tibia looked a bit like that 6 years ago. I still have the rod in. The fibula had a break further up and further down and the tibia had a spiral fracture. Thanks to the ACC scheme in NZ we don't have to pay for accident expenses and get 80% of lost pay.

I never got a cast, only a boot. It took me almost 6 months to get back on the bike. I had a neat foldable can that was a big help. I hope you won't have the joint problems I had. Use it or lose it. I still can run on hard surface for very long. But hey, it was a great wake-up call.

Hope you continue to heal well. It will take a while to get back to normal.

*edit* I just saw the pics from the operation. That fills in a lot of stuff I never got to see, thank God. Who did you get to take the photos?

I opted for no general anesthesia (just an epidural and some drugs to calm the nerves). Asked them if I could have a mirror so I could look behind the curtain at what the man was doing, no joy. Asked one of the attending nurses if she could take pictures of the show with my cell phone, no problem. Only wish they'd taken more and with greater detail cuz it isn't likely something I'll get to see up close and personal again...

I had the EMT crew take pics from the accident scene. Thanked them by making a CD with all the pics on it and dropping it by the station house.

No way would I have settled for anything less than a total knock out. You are a much braver man. Hope you don't mind me sharing this pic. It reminds me to be more careful.

A Gentle Reminder

to be more careful:

The front half of my cast has a place of honor on the mantle above the wood stove
