I believe there was some editing of some "bad" posts it recently had and during thar process the thread went poof. Its not the end of the world. I started a new one with the hope of summarizing as much of the good from the old in the first page...so that we have a chance of using the front page or two as an index/summary as the new thread grows.

I know it's been asked in other threads, and comparisons done, but you seem to have a first hand account on multiple occasions of the 690 vs the 990. I know I am considering purchasing both, but keep going back and forth because I can't decide if I will be doing more offroad/trail riding, or more on road. How do you compare the two?

Thanks for your opinions.

I've got both and dont want to lose either of them!

Even though the 690 is amazing on the street, 130kph goes all day feeling good.

and even though the 950 will go just about anywhere offroad and is an absolute blast on any open desert road!

Guess both will suite you if you have to make a choice, so just follow your heart, that's what riding is about anyway if you ask me!

Firstly I have to say both are spectacularly capable adventure bikes. If I could afford it, I'd own both! For me the 690 is a better fit for the type of riding I'm doing mostly becuase its lighter and a bit more nimble. It was only becasue of a leg injury that made me replace my 990 with the 690 so if i haddn't broken my leg I'd still have the 990!!. I miss the power of the big bike on the open road ...but don't get me wrong the 690 has heaps of grunt...how much grunt do you really need?

If it helps any...you need to take a good look at what you require form the bike and that should connect the dots for you. most of my riding is done in 200-300klm jaunts with maybe the odd 2000klm trip every year. The 690 is quite happy doing this. My mate with the 950 dose envy my ability to get to more difficult places at times but its surprising where you can take the 9ffidy!!

Thanks for the info. I think the 690R is a better fit for me than the 990 (not looking to do anything more than 300 mi/day). I currently own an SMC, but am looking for something more dirt/adventure oriented, so I am familiar with the power of the 690, and there is plenty. If it was easier to switch out the wheels on the SMC, I would probably just do that. The overall package of the R is obviously better for offroad than the SMC, so I will probably be trading.

Thanks again for the info.

Then it's easy, the enduro is very easy to trade out with sticky wheels every once in a while for some street bashing!

I've got both. I have a second set of wheels for the 690 to ease the transition from street to knobs. I will probably get a second set of wheels for the 990. Both bikes are great on and off road for the riding I do. I probably could live with out one, but it would be impossible to decide which, so I'm keeping both.
