Battle of McDowell - Highland County
Located on Rt 250 just east of McDowell, about 5 miles west of Head Waters, and about 8 miles west of the Highland County / Augusta County border. (Edit: Oops, not the WV border I wrote by mistake earlier)
For more information on the Battle of McDowell: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_McDowell Interesting note - Gen Stonewall Jackson was born in my hometown of Clarksburg WV. Click here to see the WV Historical Marker for him. ![]() Historical Marker located on Rt 250 just east of McDowell, about 5 miles west of Head Waters, and about 8 miles west of the WV / VA border. ![]() Same Marker - Side #2 ![]() View westbound on Rt 250. ![]() View eastbound on Rt 250. Highland County / Augusta County - Rt 250
Located east of Monterey about 25 miles on Rt 250 at the border of Highland County and Augusta County at the summit (I believe??) of Shenandoah Mt. As I was eastbound ascending the mountain, I was thinking, "Why would anyone go all the way to Deals Gap for twisty roads?" What a fabulous ride!
For more on Highland County: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highland_County,_Virginia For more on Augusta County: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augusta_County,_Virginia ![]() Historical Marker located on Rt 250 at the Highland Co / Augusta Co Line. There is a nice turnout & parking area with a historic area - Ft Edward Johnson (see upcoming post for that marker). ![]() Same Marker - Side #2 ![]() View westbound on Rt 250 from the turnout. The scenic overlook (next photo) is to the right. ![]() Scenic overlook westbound. ![]() Speaking of great scenery, this gentleman and his wife were riding a beautiful 1995 BMW R100RT that could almost pass for showroom new. It had "only" 98K mles! Wow! ![]() Too bad you have to ride out through all these twisty roads to get there.
