CannonTreks VI & VII - 1100 Mile Dual Sports

Just finished up with CannonTrek VI. I'm resting for a day while waiting for the riders for CannonTrek VII to arrive tomorrow. While in this intermission, I figured I'd start the ride report and post a few pictures.

The CannonTreks are 1100 mile dual sport rides in the wild and wonderful Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I have a track that is dirt oriented that takes in motorcycle single track, ORV trails, two tracks, forest roads, and some paved connectors. The track, which I try to improve each year, loops the UP and takes in some scenic and historic sights along the way. We knock it off in four long and aggressive days.

This year I have two iterations scheduled. Let me introduce the folks that rode along, and just wrapped up, CannonTrek VI.

Zach (Z@ch) Ohio

Frank (Bay Window) Ontario

Randy (Schmittenhymer) Ontario

Dan (VetMXR) Michigan

Randy (Motorgearhead) Michigan

Jay (docjay) Ontario

Jim (Hoffer) Wisconsin

Bob (Loopy) Ontario

Ben (BENRON) Wisconsin

Corey (Yeroc40) Wisconsin

Curtis (Motorexer667) Ohio

Ronald (RonaldKTM) Ontario

Tracy (PinkToad) Indiana

The first group just completed their ride last night. They were pretty happy to meet the challenges and make it through.

Yes, it is true, we did assimilate a woman into the team this year. It is part of our diversity program. Since we already had these guys . . .

. . . we thought we would include a woman this time. Worked out fine.

I've still got the next team coming in for their turn so there will be a pause in the ride report for a bit. With all the people and places over the two iterations, I try to write it chronologically so it makes some sense. The riders will be jumping in and telling their stories as we move through the timeline.

If you are curious in the mean time you can read last year's ride report or this year's planning thread.

I've still got the waterproof Optio and carry it on my belt for those quick draw crash pictures or snaps on the fly when following someone.

Since the weather was favorable, I carried a DSLR in a chest holster on this one. The dust was atrocious but the camera fared well. 18-200 lens.

I'll see if I can scare up a picture of the chest rig later on.

Wow on the pics. Nikon 18-200? What kind of camera? I'd be interested in seeing this chest holdster. Ben's water photo is fantastic!

With good light, these are point and shoot . . . sort of.

Chest holster set-up. Optio on belt near left hand. (Funny story with the picture will come later.)

CT VI - Day 0

Day 0 is a travel day. People show up in the assembly area, unload their bikes and gear, and get ready to take off the next morning.

I ran into BENRON down in Marinette, WI so we stopped to do some shopping on the way up (places like Tractor Supply, Canadian Tire, etc).

Ben had picked up some parts and went to work using the mobile shop facilities contained in the CannonVan.

Participants are greeting by the ride banner which features a picture from the previous year.

Bikes often arrive strikingly clean.

Cannon sits inside his van chatting with the boys who are standing out in the rain.

Might as well unload.

Randy rehearsing his music act with his two sidemen.

That awkward time for new people when the CannonVets pick up where they left off last year just like they never left. About 30% new people on this ride.

Trying to figure out how to load all that stuff on the bike.

A quick install of a GPS power cable.

Quasi-military operation.

They are pretending to be helpful, but these guys are really making an assessment concerning whether this woman is going to make it or not.

Social Time

We try to have a little dinner and social time so people can get to know each other before the ride starts.

Zach getting carded (again).

Good food.

In his eagerness, Frank was willing to volunteer for about anything.

Cannon explaining how they fish a kidney stone out of you after five days of agony.

Randy telling someone that no, he hasn't really broken a bone in his leg yet . . .

Frank was so excited about getting riding on the Trek that he just started off on his own.

Tracy suddenly realizing that it isn't the 1100 mile dirt ride she needs to be worried about. What she really needs to worry about is the people she will be traveling with.

Class Pictures

Getting ready the next morning.

Yeroc getting ready Torock.

Randy ready to roll.

Ronald wondering if drinking all that imported beer (Bud Light) was such a good idea.

Class pictures.

Curtis, Bob, and BENRON. In this picture, Bob is fillling in for Jim who was running late.

Jay, Bob, and Ronald. In this picture Bob is playing himself.

Randy and Dan

Zach, Tracy, and Yeroc. Just before I pulled the trigger on this picture I heard a female voice say "Does this helmet make my ass look big?" Cracked us up. I had to redo the picture. I realized right then that after only a few hours in the assembly area and a little dinner social time Tracy had been assimilated into the team. Yes, we really are that bad of an influence.

Randy, Cannon, and Frank (If you ever come across this combination in person, just run away.)

Guys?

We now have to use the gender neutral term "Trekkers" instead.
